    Hi,

This is my first post, so please bear with me. I thought I'm having a problem with logging in since this morning:mad: , but finally, this evening I got the permission to proceed to my registration.

I was encouraged to post, after reading so many stories from the forum members saying how they love this beautiful city, although, there are still a handful who have their bad experiences. It is indeed a nice feeling that amidst our economic and political mess, there are still people who come and love to stay in the Philippines particularly in the place where we came from. :o :o

As a simple introduction, I was born in Dgte and left after my graduation in 1985. Just like everyone else, I left the place and seek for a greener pastures, but never leave the country since. Having said that, I am proud to say that, although I didn't get into the manpower-pooling agency during my junior years of my career, but I was able to land in one of the biggest company in the Philippines, which ranks the highest salary standards in all of the industry.

At present, I am living in Tabunok, Cebu City with my family and 3 children. I retired from my previous job in 2005 and started a construction business a year later. For now, being a new entrant, my company is moving on a very slow pace, and I am working hard just to make both ends meet. Life is getting harder nowadays. :(

At home, I spent my time listening to vinyl music (my username tells), or what we call the analog system. I am hoping that someday, if I would be able to make into my construction business, I would build a house in Dumaguete and listen to my music and you guys be my guests. :D :D :D

Anybody in the house who’s into vinyl?

Sorry wouldn't even know where you could get vinyl!!

Well now they spend thousands to make the digital sound like analog. Welcome to the forum. I was living in Cebu for a couple of years nice place but getting a little big and traffic was starting to make me crazy. I am in the middle thinking of going back to Cebu. or transfering to Dumaguete still not sure. Have to buy a new house and start business again. feels like my lif is up in the air not sure which way to go. I wish you well with your business I understand how hard it is to make back home. Right now I am in Taiwan teaching English and this is not fun. A lot of strain of my relationship with my asawa. I teaching children here they make me crazy but the money is good here 80,000 peso a month but the living here is like in America not cheap but okay. well again welcome to the forum.

    Welcome Spinner.
Like Teacher,I wish you all the best and hopefully you'll find anough customers here for construction work.
I was wondering how you could manage to put 13 smileys into your posting.
I thought it was restricted to only 5.
I guess the administrator has changed that rule, or you are simply so clever to know how to bypass that rule.
Good luck. Dumaguete is a good choise.
There is a lot going on here and maybe we get a second Mall soon: Yabshi. :D

Thanks Teacher, Jellyfish and all for your welcoming me to the forum. I like this place, I feel at home, although, you guys sound foreign to me. :D :D :D

Regarding smileys, I was about to make 16 when it said that I am only allowed 15. And FYI, I don't even know how to use some of these. :o  :D Still on the learning curve. :D :D

I can understand you guys don't want more malls. :D :D :D I can remember my friend said "Women are born shoppers". Imagine, he was made to wait for 3 hours waiting in the corner while she's doing shopping! :D I'm sorry, no offense for the ladies.

I had been in Manila for 15 years and Cebu for almost 9 years now. I chose Cebu because, traffic is not so congested compared to Manila. But in terms of building a home, I prefer Dumaguete than Cebu because most of the latter's topography is rough and not suitable residential. Dumaguete is good, its slightly rolling from the foot of Mt Talinis down to the pier. My place (its my parents') is in Camanjac and it is about 20 meters above sea level and about 3-4km from St. Paul University going westward. So its not really flat, and flooding issues may not be a problem, in some cases.

Anyway, thanks again for the warm welcome and may you have a good time in Dumaguete. For those who might want to come to Cebu or something, please try to email me, maybe I can be of help.

Well I think you are right about the LAND

Yeah, The land is very good in Dumaguete. But kind of worried about population is there enough for business, Cebu almost unlimited supply of customers in Cebu. such a large supply of customers. not as much traffic in Cebu as Manila, But it just means in Cebu they can drive a little more crazy. just make turns where ever they want just pull out in front of others etc. etc.

    Welcome to DI,

Yes most of us are foriegners on this forum, many of us are interested in development here, to some Malls mean urbanisation and want things just stay the same. Clean sea water etc, etc. But I personal feel that there is no harm in having a few Malls to improve the shopping and some extra places to go and eat or drink. But the problem is that a lot of us have come to Negros to get away from the filth of Cebu or Manila and the traffic jams etc.

Duma is getting to be a haven for tourist and ex-pats the potential for more tourism does see the need of new Malls and development that attracts tourism this can only be good for the local economy and create needed jobs. But we have the those here that want to see no changes no further development.

What ever happens its out of our control and development will change this small city we even have taxi's now. The roads are being improved and more business are being opened. I forsee that Duma and Negros will be one of the Philippines number one tourist spots as it has some very nice beaches and its ripe for development.

I would also be watching Bayawan of which is bound to be as popular as Duma in the near future. I know that many foriegn businessmen are thinking of setting up business there why the land is still cheap.

Moving here could be a good investment in your future, but it finding the work at this present time that should be a main thought especially if you have your own family to be reponsible to.

Best of luck in your endevours

Thank you Babel-fish for the warm welcome. Sorry for the late reply.

I can feel that you love the place very much, and I just hope that your presence will give impact to the development of Dumaguete in particular and the Phils in general. If anyone of you guys is an instrument to the development of the city, then, go ahead, file your candidacy for mayorship and rule Dumaguete.  :D :D :D You know what I mean... Our local leaders in the country. Sorry no offense.

I don't know if malls make the city improve. Others say negative. For most of us thinks that it will help urbanize the city, generate employment, and taxes, but, for some (economist point of view) there is that major factor that contribute to the operation of malls in ones place that is detrimental to its economy. I dont' know why, and I'd been thinking about the real explanation but didn't get the right answers. Maybe, this has something to do with the effect on individual's disposable income and savings.

Talking about Bayawan, I have been there during my teenage years. I just have this uncle before, who had an Hacienda in one of the remote areas in Bayawan. That was 1974, when sugar industry in the Phils was at its peak. My father asked me to quit schooling (right after I graduated in the elementary as first honor student) to work in the farm planting sugar cane for 2.5 pesos a day. :o  :D :D That was really low life I had, but I like to imagine those days how I manage myself to survive. I still can remember the place Bayawan. They used to have big fishing in this city. They also had Tulong Sugar Milling Co. in Sta. Catalina. I'm not sure if it is still there. And right behind the city going to the northeast, is the place called Canalum. This used to be a vast riceland. About 30 km off Bayawan past Canalum, were big haciendas in places of Talavera, Banoyo, Nangka, kalumboyan, Kalamtokan, etc.

I would love to hear stories about this place because this can bring my memories back in my childhood. I am also looking forward to go back this place and live for the remaining years of my life with my children.

I as you guessed am very fond of Negro's its one of the best Islands and Duma is my adopted city though I live in Sibulan. I care very much about the Philippines and the people though I moan and complain I am a fond critic. I really would like to see RP rid its poverty and become a better trading entity. As for running the city no, I do not have a business and its being run okay the Mayor to me seems to be switched on, one can see development to the roads drainage and its noticible. Of course Filipino management seems strange to most foreigners we think things can be done a bit better on the planning side cause we live in countries that have more money to play with concerning development.

Tulong Sugar Milling Co. in Sta. Catalina is still there my partner was born near kalumboyan and her family have a small farm and of course grow sugar cane and corn crops. So I am often in Bayawan its a clean well run town that has started development in an obvious plan for tourism. I myself feel that Bayawan is the place that I may buy land and build a few houses on in a couple of years time.

Concerning Mall's too many can cause the customers to change their shopping habits and the cities business loose trade to the Malls. However Malls have became part of modern day living I really don't think that the new Robinsons Mall will be bad for Duma, but more built too soon could as the population is too small to support the need for more at this present time.
