It can't belive that Dumaguete is trying to enforce such sweeping traffic regulations. I can see starting helmet wearing enforcement on the larger CC bikes and not the scooters, but of course there are a lot of bikes there that would defy specific classification. If you start with the big boys than maybe those that are really concerned about safety will start wearing the helmets whether they need to or not.

Since the average Dumagueteno cannot afford a helmet I also believe they should be subsidized if concern for the citizens is the true aim of these regulations rather as a source of income. I also have to wonder does the local government really want to replace every MC with a car? Not a good idea with the current condition of roads in and around Dumaguete. They really are trying to put the cart before the horse.

If they are going to start some kind of traffic enforcement it should be against the speeding lorries and buses that fly between the provencial towns and are a bigger threat to life.

my opinion is that is right desicion about helmets...They should also repair roads, make traffic signs, traffic lights like everywere else in the world...
Also in Europe or America a lot of people can't afford to make technical things about car but they still have car because they need it.They find the way to pay the things for vechile that needs to be paid...so that's just really right desicion about helmets...
Also about pedi-cabs...I guess that taxi is 2 expensive for the people here but they could at least close the traffic for pedi-cabs on BLVD...anyhow Cebu is crowded but they had much better traffic than here...
But I agree with Pedro about ''flying buses'' hehe

so...that's my opinion wich, I guess will not make desicions in goverment..LOL

    enjoy your surfin'

    regards tOM.

So once again it comes down to no money no helmet no mirrors, well how does a filipino afford a motor bike. hmm problems, problems and more problems.

Safety is thrown out the window, cross your self and go for hell or leather. Anybody travelled on a bus lately. The driver gets in puts his foot down and drive like he is being chased by bats out of hell, of course he crosses him self and relies on god. This factor seems to be a filiipino cultural thing, forget the safty factors god will keep me safe.

This is not really a money factor its a lack of logic thinking and pure stupidity it will never change its a cultural thing and the filipino always knows best.

Well done again wise old man (I'm older I believe). Why you're still here ?
Go on with this, because it's the real hard truth which is only known by you
Poor guy. What YOU think is the truth and all others are either so wrong or so scared to admit your truth (is'nt it ?)
Take a brake and reread all your postings.
That will also keep you away for a while from new judgements who are so important to tell us, so we can change the world c.q. the Philippines.
You know, I'm here because I like it here and I HAVE TO accept then that there are surely some things I would like to see different.
But...... maybe when these things ARE different as what I like, the whole package of charm of the Philippines will change as well. Do I take that risk ? NO !
We have seen enough how all these 'good' things in our western world have made it THE place to be, was n't it ?
But for what reason then we went away from there ? Only the money ?
Even then you have to accept the rest or try on a polite way to communicate with e.g. DI members if some things maybe could be enhanced by them.
    My 2 cents.

    Stupid Helmet

Helmet is very very very impractical here.

Don't you know that People from Manila are amazed why we have "Parking Boys" in this city? It's because our bikes are unmanegeably numerous! Welcome to Dumaguete City- the motorcycle center of the Philippines! Just imagine if that stupid helmet law is implemented. The food-court tables in Super-Lee will be filled with over-grown Crystal-Balls! No more space for cheese burgers at Jollibee! not to mention our favorite "Gimmick" and "ElCamino" on Saturdays. Don't even think about helmet booths because just a dozen won't fit in it trust me. Our once gentle people will all wander the sidewalks carrying over-sized shiny weapon of mass destruction :D. But seriously, it's Big enough for terrorists to perfectly hide their home-made KABOOOB during "Buglasan." No longer we can recognize each other on the road. And needles to say, it's a perfect opportunity for criminals.

I understand that helmet is for out safety but just let us make the choice! The same way as I don't want to carry oxygen tank if I swim. We know it's Risky! but it's balanced by high Productivity and zero inconvenience. Afterall, this is NOT a communist country.

If our government is really sincere about our safety then why not ban Smoking and Drinking instead??

Helmets are compulsary everywhere else for a few reasons, 1 is of course safety, but you also have to look at the speed people travel about here, you be hard pushed to go much more than 30mph or 50kph, where as in other places 100mph or 160kph is fairly normal, so protective clothing is vital, a helmet is generally of no use for a pillion passenger who often ends up with spinal injuries, PLUS a helmet that is not certified can be as leathal as not having one!! that will surely out cost a "normal" filipino.

I still say stop the dangerous driving here and move onto helmets later!!
