Wow! Sounds like you found yourself in the wrong part of Dubai! We peeps like to hang out at Dubai Marina, near where we work, live, shop, and play around the many 5-star hotels that cater to mostly expats, tourists, etc. The clubs and bars are awesome, not to be missed! Want proof? Google Barasti Bar and see what you come up with. It's a favorite hangout. Also Buddha Bar at Grosvenor House and Peppermint at Habtoor Grand. I could list a lot more hotels, spas, malls, restaurants, etc., but you won't need it since you're not coming back. As for me, we're going to Atlantis Hotel on the Palm tomorrow - it just opened on September 24th and it's reportedly the best Atlantis Hotel in the world with the largest aquarium and an almost-vertical slide through a shark-infested pool. Neato!

Nice to meet you, Teacher! Was just in Alexandria in July. Still as beautiful as ever, but so much has changed! It's all about upscale shopping centers and pricey condominiums now.

Had a holiday in Dubai for 2 weeks and it was the best holiday I ever had... Aside from culture and traditions, Dubai's history is quite amazing. From architecture, dinner cruise at The Creek, to dune bashing, dined in low-cushioned under the stars entertained by belly dancers and the tax-free shopping was a bonus. The best of our holiday was dining at Burj Al Arab. :D
