Civil War, WW1, Great Depression, with central banks and without, with gold standard and without, with 90% marginal income tax rates or 25%, with WW2, Cold War, Vietnam War, stagflation, inflation, deflation

The United States takes a licking but keeps on ticking.

Don't forget Reganomics, fuzzy math, deregulation and derivatives. We better only be in a reccession because a depression would be good for no one and it would not be limited to the USA only.

When Rome fell it took over 100 years. The American Empire has fallen and can't get up. There are about 300 Million yanks remaining on a planet with 6.7 Billion.
Obama says the Iraq war costs about 10 Billion per month. There isn't enough US dollars in circulation to begin to pay off their dept. This current financial crisis is a symptom as many of you have noted. The disease won't be cured in my lifetime or yours. We live in interesting times.

I don't think this is the bottom. We're looking at something not seen before...we all keep trying to predict the future through the prism of the past.

The largest credit bubble in history just popped, and the bubble was global. What happens next, i think, is systemic failure.

Dow 8,000 and SP 800 will look like the stratosphere when this thing susses out.

IMHO, I'm getting ready for very, very difficult economic times ahead.

atlargex are you familiar with the old axiom, "an empty can makes the most noise" or "shallow rivers run noisy"?

Have you ever heard somebody say one of these and wondered what it all meant?

    Buy Gold

If you look back through history you would find that one ounce of pure gold has hardly changed at all. One ounce of pure gold now still purchases the same as it did 200 years ago. It is likely that this scenario will continue and over the next 200 years, inflation, recession etc. will continue as more paper money is printed.

Yet the value of the pure gold troy ounce will remain the same in terms of purchasing power. As we all know, gold has been steadily rising since last year and has recently experienced a fall and has stabilized out currently. However it appears it may be on the rise again and reaching for a new level.

Get out of US dollars, out of Yen, out of Euros, out of all fiat currencies and into silver and gold. Gird up your loins for extreme volatility, for NGM raids on silver and gold prices to drive them down temporarily, or on stocks to raise them up, and keep your eyes on the horizon, where surely in the not distant future paper currencies will become laughable.

Argentum et aurum comparenda sunt --- Gold and silver must be bought.

Haha. Okay, I give up. The U.S. is an empire and it has fallen. Just like it has already fallen a bunch of times before and picks itself back up. I suppose one of the differences between Rome and the U.S. is when the U.S. falls the rest of the world falls with it.

So, if the U.S. is a fallen empire then what does it become? A huge Mexico? Are we going to form tribes and hunt buffalo?

Massive civil war and the U.S. breaks up? Mass alien abductions in the Midwest and South because the U.S. is no longer able to send it's airforce after them? Paybacks are a b*tch, the aliens still remember what happened to their cousins at Area51.
