Being detained by immigration agents in Hong Kong is a real possibility if you are Filipinos, especially young women, are routinely singled out by immigration agents and detained, for fear that these women will stay illegally in Hong Kong. Held for around 16 hours with nothing to eat. Women were also subjected to a humiliating strip-search for drugs. Even with no criminal record and a valid Philippine passport. How Filipino women are being treated in Hong Kong? Held without cause, denied food, isolated and then strip-searched? If that happened in the United States, there would be a remarkable public outcry. There are probably Filipino citizens right now being detained in Hong Kong for no other reason than their being Filipino.

It truly amazing to me (in a bad way) what some countries will do to their hired help. And these are legal hired help at that. My asawa has told me how her Chinese employers would hold her passport which for most countries that issue them is illegal, and wanted her to work on Sunday's and on all days past working hours. Fortunately when she did get out she met other Philippinas and learned more about her rights. The agencys that send them out really need to have better seminars on overseas workers rights and have more inspection and oversight over their workers.

Overall I get a really jaundice view of the Chinese employers but I know also from my travels that treatment and conditions for overseas workers is not much better in most of the Middle East countries also. As of 2007 there were over 300 Fillipina workers who are in safe houses in Kuwait waiting to get back home because they are escaping abusive employers or conditions. I would bet the story is the same for the rest of the countries in that region. Unfortunately it is a risk these workers were willing to take.

I guess this happens in a lot of places Teacher but as westerners we are seldom confronted with it. I doubt if it will give a public outcry in the US there ain't the public interest for it to interest the media, Immigration officers by nature are not very pleasant to get involved with and best to stay away of them.

Would advise to have the gf hold plenty of cash it shows she has the means to support herself and is not there to immigrate.

Strip searched and detained in Hong Kong? That's nothing!

Teach, you ought to hear some of the stories about what happens to the OCW's in Kuwait and SA!

Sounds like a nice way to get a 16 hour break to see the city without the ball and chain.

That's sad. I've been to Hong Kong a few times but never experienced that. I hope this doesn't happen often.

Teacher, I have been to HK just in August (the third time) and never had ANY problems.
I real wonder where you get all this funny informations from. It seems that you just read some things online and take everything for real. I remember one of your copy paste articles where you stated raising eyebrows means "NO". I just can't find it anymore, seems the admin deleted it.

Many of your copy-paste stuff is just untrue and confusing.
