I am vaguely thinking about purchasing a yacht, about 14 foot, either dinghy or cat. I have owned and raced mono hulls in Australia for many years, and now surrounded by water am wondering why I am not sailing.

Have you done much sailing, looks like the renting option is very limited, would you consider buying ?

At the moment I am just testing the water, Hobbie Cat, or Nacra would be fun here.

I am also thinking about the possibilities of owning some type of boat, sail or powered for the same reasons, all that water and the many uses for it. When I question asawa ko about boats in Dumaguete she told me to have a dugout built for me. To start that would probably not be a bad idea and I would definitely get a workout with it. At first I would mainly use it for fishing and diving but as I get more settled I would consider something larger to have an alternate means of transportation to get around the islands. I am sure though there are a lot of implications of where it would have to be docked or questions like do land owners on the beach have the right to build private docks to be investigated. I would guess more research on existing marinas in the PI would be a good place to start.

I have done a quick google search and there are yacht clubs and brokers about. I would go the "put it on a trailer and take it home route" for a number of reasons, security, weather, and the distances are not great. Modern multihulls or even mono hulls would be good enough for island hopping. I think from memory small multi hulls are made in Vietnem, Nacra's. They are safe, fast and efficient, designed for ease of rigging and you can take it home.

As for the "dug out", well there is nothing more frustrating than an inefficient sailboat, or perhaps a cheap Chinese made bicycle.

i had notthought about a purchase at this point. when checking prices in the U.S. it was about $7,000.00 for a decent small boat not quite there financially yet. dont know what it would cost in the phils?

Consider building one. Approximately $1000-$2000 will build what you seek.

Google is your friend. Try doing a google search for "sailboat plans", etc. There are hundreds of websites with plans for small sailboats, many of them free. My neighbor built a small (18 ft) sailboat from plans he got for free online. The materials are here, and most are cheaper than US prices.

Labor here is a fraction of US prices. The best way to know your boat is to build it yourself.

anybody know why there are so little sailing boats around in the Philippines? You would assume with all the islands it would be ideal for sailing around.
