Dennis you are showing you give a hoot. And USA is not the only provider of Technology, information and etc, etc. If your fat and your to big to get in your car its really time to give a hoot. Believe me I have been there worn the T-Shirt and now give a real hoot about my health and how I look to my honey. We love all you Americans, it's just some of you just stick out, sorry to say but its true...
Some of us talk too loud because we have been in too many conflicts the last 20 or so years where lots of cannons, rifles, harpoons, morters, explosions etc. went off too close for comfort and which unfortunately has damaged the hearing. And yes it is obvious we do love food, beer wine, brandy, whatever which gets us talking loud again. We can never really be sure we are doing that until at least 30-40 faces are looking at us giving us their full attention, thats when we get a clue.
Jesusitshot, As an American, I don't like loudmouths any more than anyone else does. Believe it or not, there are a whole lot of soft-spoken Americans and I'm one of them. It's been my experience that most loud-mouthed Americans are business men (salesman types) and they get on my nerves too. As to being fat, luckily I started lifting weights when I was 17 and I haven't had a problem with my weight. At 63, I can't lift as much or do as many reps as I used to but, I still do it 3 times a week. I have lost most of my hair though!!! Dennis
I have had the same experiences and I am registered as having impaired hearing at the Brits vet office. I also find my self speaking louder in a busy noisy place so I fully understand that problem. However it sometimes seems very comical with guys just a nose gap away shouting hey "you have a nice day" to each other. The problem is with frequency loss hearing devices are pretty d*mn useless as they heighten the back ground noise. I tried everything even those that are stated to surmount the problem it simply is a loss cause. However its just a bit of fun and I am always tell my American friends to turn down the volume, lol
Well, I guess that the OP, loney, has a better idea of where to go in Dumaguete for stimulating company now. Dennis seems to be the only one to have risen quickly to strike at my provocative bait! You are right, not too many people in this world really care what Canadians think. We like it that way, too! Did you ever consider that half the mischief in the world and most of the bar-fights are really started by bored Canadians? It's really fun to stir up the Ka-Ka and then walk quietly away. Most of the time you Yanks think that it is one of your own that did it and flail away, notwithstanding. I just visited your town of Drake's Branch, Virginia via Google Earth. It seems like a nice place. Why don't you tell us a bit more about it and how you came to be interested in Dumaguete? There you go. Is that a sufficient olive branch?
Shows your virile, lol I also know a lot of soft spoken Americans and some really skinny ones, some with and some without hair. But at a guess I would say your right about the salesmen types. One tried to sell me Viagra the other day and clearly everyone knew what was said and know I know why he chose me to pitch his sales to (I have all my hair) joking of course, lol
Davfitz, Well, you reeled me in!!! Now I'll take the hook out of my mouth and let the healing begin!!! :o Reminds me of what I heard about Canada's national sport...One continuous fight and every once in a while Hockey breaks out!! You can tell I'm a "Warm weather person" LOL As for Drakes Branch, it's a sleepy little town of about 800 people. It used to have 1200 people but, they closed down the only factory in town and 400 people moved away. It's in Charlotte County in South Central Virginia along the North Carolina border. From Google Earth it's just a bunch of trees. Boring! I'm 63 years old, been married 3 times (7yrs, 26yrs and 7yrs) all 3 were American women (the 2nd wife was Puerto Rican). I have 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls but, they are scattered all over the US and we aren't very close. I spent seven years in the US Navy (1963-1970) with the Naval Security Group and was station in Pensacola, FL, Edzell, Scotland, Capetown, SA, South Vietnam and Taipei, Taiwan. During my tours in all these countries, I saw many places that I loved and promised myself that one day I would return. 2009 seems as good a year as any to fulfill my dreams since I'm now retired with Social Security income and I'm unencumbered. Having been married 3 times and divorced, I'm not looking for a wife...I'm looking for a Life!!! I originally was lurking on the Living in Cebu forum when I saw a link to the Dumaguete site and it seems to be such a beautiful city, I thought I would learn more about it. I plan to come to the Phillipines around October of this year, do a little traveling around and decide after that where I will put down roots. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!!:D Dennis
A pretty interesting story, Dennis. Thanks for sharing it. Cebu VS Dumaguete? A no-brainer: DUMAGUETE! For me, Cebu is a convenient Port of Entry and the "larger town down the road". I prefer to live here. Cebu has the larger agencies of Government represented as a regional HQ if you will. Customs is a full port: Dumaguete a sub-port. Immigration there can process a 13A visa in lieu of a trip to Manila. Dumaguete can't. This latter of interest to expats married to Filapinas. Cebu's the spot for more variety in shopping. You'll be surprised at the little things you miss and can't possibly live without. For me it was dill pickles. None in Dumaguete but at least seven varieties in Ayala's grocery store. It makes a nice getaway to go to Cebu for a few days. Starting 12 January, we'll also have thrice weekly air service: a fourty minute hop VS a 51/2 hour bus trip. Dumaguete is a gentler, slower pace of life. I had to leave town to realize one of the things I missed most. There are NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS here. Chaos? Confusion? Congestion? Sure - but we all manage. I walk, ride a bicycle, occasionally venture out on a motor bike. I love the tricycle taxicabs! It all works and people somehow get along. If you wish to express it negatively, at least you get to stare down death eyeball to eyeball. I love it! As for hockey: be careful. In about four minutes from now is the gold medal game of the International Ice Hockey Federation world Junior Championship from Ottawa. You have likely only heard of the NHL. Having disposed of the USA (surprisingly) and the Russians we now give the Swedes a chance to get their money back from last year. We manage to get it here as a Video On Demand stream. Much better and certainly far more cheap than I'd manage in Ottawa. I'm happy. You should be too!
That just what I was after 9 years ago, however one soon finds living in the Philipinnes pretty droll if you have no sex life and no one to look after you and no one to love. So be careful what you wish for. You could possibly come here in October and be married before September or at least end up in a deep relationship with a beautiful young woman. When I first came here I lasted for one week since then I have had heart aches from two girl friends and now on the third one. No normal heterosexual man can survive on their own for long in the Filipino candy shop. lol Take care choose well don't let them hook you you go and hook them and the internets dating services they are not the right place to look. Nor are the girlie bars as your normally find most girls there are gold diggers, but not all some guys have struck very lucky. Best wishes on creating a new life and I must say I am happy with mine.
I've always been one who likes to live in a smaller city with the big city conveniently close so Dumaguete sounds like just the place for me! By the way, for any Americans reading this interested in college football, Texas just beat Ohio State 24 to 21 with a touchdown with only 16 seconds to go in the game....Heartbreaker for Ohio State. Dennis
