Sorry. But this madness require a statement. It can seems as humor, and in some ways it also are. But probably The Philippines is one of the countries wich not at all are known for it's "animal frendly behaving".I dont think that even 1% of the countrys dogs ever have seen a vet there. So that a Pet dog from abroad which have the nacessary papers worked out abroad for travelling is shure to improve statistically the "Phil-dog".
For the Dog which is coming in it shure will be a hard time to come, how hard probably will be the Question from which climatic zone it leaves. Bacteriologic it will be a new wourld. And that probably not will favour a dog which is allready 10 years and allready on the downhill ride in health strenght.

Basically this should at least to be taken in consideration in the whole matter of pros and cons for the old family member.:(

i can see both sides of this, to me i'd be pulled both ways, cos leaving a dog when u emigrate would be like leaving a family member in another country, however i would suggest comming here first, then the dog following if you think the place is suitable.

thank you that is exactly what we have decided to do. further, some of the responses have raised issues that did not seem to concern our vet. we are attempting to do additional research into european dog breeds living in the tropic. thanks all

I'm no vet, But i have seen PH dogs, and their bacteria level. And have also had expences "medical" with my kids who treat these puppies like them at home.

But as you, I dont want anything to happen to your dog.

I hope your vet are right about his concerns.

But for sure I'll take precautions for my kids according to PH climate and bacterial condition and special dogs there.

    cebu vet

i wanted to get back to the folks that had expressed concern over a european dog breed living in p.i. i spoke with a prominent veterinarian who operates a clinic in cebu. he is dr. adrien ybanez. he assured me that bacteria etc is not a problem for our dog. surprisingly, the bacteria is much more diverse in the states. his belief was that our dog should have no real problems adjusting to life in dumaguete. thank you all for expressing your concern. jim m

I'm puzzled about the bacteria concerns too. Way down the list for dogs I reckon. From what I've seen - and my wife confirms...the main issues are worms and rabies. Worms are universal among dogs in the Philippines and rabies is common enough to be a worry. Get all the shots, and de-worm very regularly and the dog should be fine. I'm actually wondering how well dogs acclimatize - particularly those with thicker coats. We're looking at getting a shiba inu in the next few months when a breeder delivers....that'll be interesting when we move..

    coach160,

I hope the following links will help.

    1. Philippine Canine Club This is the site for the Philippine Canine Club, Ic., a club affiliated with the AKC (American Kennel Club).

Most of the members in the said club specially the serious breeders have one time or another, IMPORTED a dog. I know some of them in fact.

    2. Courteous Canines Kennel: Labrador Retrievers and Old English Mastiffs - Owners Directory Look for or contact Cathy Valmonte (cathyvalmonte@yahoo.com). I know for a fact that she OFTEN brings her dogs TO and FROM the US and other countries for dog shows. Im sure she will have a very good idea on your questions.

Most of the member of OEM (Old English Mastiff ) Philippines IMPORTED their dogs. They would have idea's too.

Im helping as I am a dog lover and my dogs at home are "papered" as we say. Meaning Registered with PCCI.

Im sure if you have the right papers, breeders here would welcome you, as another dog coming in, means, fresh BLOODLINE for the specific breed.

    GOOD LUCK!

    I agree

And your doctor is right! I know for a fact that serious breeders do IMPORT dogs from EUROPE, US, Australia, Canada, etc.....

And I don't think they will bring these dogs into the P.I. if it was bad here for you canine.

My Rottweiler comes from a line that was bought from Germany. I know the owner has no problems whatsoever.

Be sure to have the dog vaccinated though, same as humans, going to a 3rd world country. One does need the shots, yes?
