I agree with Teacher on the phone thing. When we finally move there we may be able to support ourselves with the money we stop spending on phone calls. Even when asawa ko is not calling, I think she sends at least one cell home a month. At first I thought it was a sickness and maybe it is.

As for comfort until you have lived on a metal ship that occaisionally loses power and water, sleeping on a 1 1/2 inch matress, in rough seas trying to eat greasy food while others around you are chucking their dinner back up, sleeping occasionally on barren beaches while firefights go on around you, I can truly say that I would be comfortable sleeping in a field in a tent and I have for extended periods of time and really enjoyed it. But of course the plan is to do your best so the rest of your life doesn't have to be that way. So thanks for recommending a resonable designer Rhoody.

As for living near relatives that is one of my purposes for wanting to move to Dumaguete. Maybe it is different when you are married because I feel half of my family is there and I want to be around them very much. My children will have much better behaved playmates and a lot more of them. There is so much I am looking forward to its hard to contain myself at times. I also agree Teacher that if my relatives have a talent for building and are willing to help for me that is icing on the cake.

Solar power is a nice touch.. but do not forget that you can use wind power as well or as a major source. Wind is usually around night time as well. and it is a fairly cheap investment compared to larg solar cells (I guess it is electrical power you want out of the sun not heat :-))

To put up an modern windmill would cost a fraction compared to solarcells.
But Perhaps a combination of them both is a more cost efficient solution.

Germany and holland have a lot of nice eco friendly power solutions for sale.
and that market grows day by day.

Diod lightbulbs take 3-5 watts but shines like 40-60 watts nowdays.. and holds no mercury as flouresant lights do.

Led battery is hardly Eco but development is going on in the battery world also. When I go to the phils in May.. I will bring some of the modern LED lightbulbs to have myself but it's also a great gift to "inlaws" that have a tough budget.. giving them some bulbs that cut's their electricity bills a bit is never wrong. (High income don't make you rich.. low spending is)

Most of the electrical power you use in the phils is for the aircons.
Well insulated house might keep the temprature down and still have nice temp indors. Good insulation and good windows will in most areas also keep noice out (or in). It can be quite disturbing listening to "family argues" or woman catfights from your neighbours..

Since my profession is in the electrical industry and working with teaching in the subject perhaps some of my ideas might give som seeds for designing an eco home. I think it is the right step to take in any region of the planet nowdays..

Stepan I have seen how Germany has been a leader in using just about all forms of alternative power and have flown above the German countryside and seen all of the wind towers but I did not know that wind power devices would be cheaper at least not if you are just using one or two towers at the most. I would bet that Koycera would be suppliers of solar cells in the asian market but I could not guess which asian countries are currently trying wind power and who might be manufacturing the turbines.

From the little bit of reading I have done so far about designing an eco friendly home there are so many considerations such as direction of the house concerning prevailing winds and path of the sun or that high sloping roofs are best for installing solar panels.

Concerning the wind power generators are they really being used for home use? When you see them in advertisements or from the air it is usually as part of a wind farm, I have never seen one being used to power a single home or at least I never got that impression.

    Thanks Stefan

Well thanks for your input Stefan. They are good ideas I not sure about wind power at my house and many other location in the Philippines just because most of the places seem to only have light winds. I very interested in the light LED bulbs they sound great. The ones I use now are 7w but seem to work very well. I was buying them, 3 for 100p.

But I going to keep my house and not build a new one but I will make as many ECO changes as possible to my house. I’m trying to figure out a small hydro system because there is a nice year round stream near my house that could be used if I can figure the best way to do it.

If I can figure out how the old fashion water mills worked maybe there is something I can do. Oh ! Perdo I have seen some private wind mills in California and some packages that have wind and solar systems packaged together.
