    Jed, welcome to DI

one reason for my answer is simply that I have more info's about new mwembers than "normal" members.
the other reason is that each new member gets the welcome-messege to introduce himself. Your own first 4 words are already enough to make things looking better.
As there are some threads about safety on DI it is also easy to find some answers. So back to your question (and the original poster)

    Is Dumaguete Safe ?

    For me : Yes
For a foreigner sitting dead drunk at Tocino Country with a 2000 Dollar camera and the wallet with creditcards and money on the table :No

Thats exactly the answer someone can get providing that many information

    its DANGEROUS out here

The question was "is it safe for foreigners". Well, what do you mean by foreigner, where are you from, another Philippine isalnd, say Cebu, or another Asian country, Vietnam, Laos or perhaps Singapore. With a question like that, perhaps American.

I can only suggest in all honesty that its very dangerous. Once you enter the "DUMAGUETE ZONE", its lawless. There are pirates, wild animals, the probablilty of getting hit by space junk increases. The sourrounding mountains are no better. Be aware of the "drop bears". They fall out of the trees on inocent foreigners.

So my suggestion to you is either stay where you are, or if you travel make sure you travel with your mother.

One point is since the heavy rain and floods its dangerous to ride back home from the city after drinking 10 ice cold beers because someone has moved the potholes. Lol

Thankfully I don't drink and drive but even then its hard to miss the new pot holes.

So if you come to Dumaguete City and like to drink loads of iced beers make sure you hotel is next to the bar and there is not too many stairs to climb. lol

Dumaguete is safe as long as you avoid the foreigners. The foreigners are dangerous. If you get into a tricky situation, just drop your beer and run. The beer will slow them down because they will have to stop and drink it for you. Make sure it's cold though, warm beer will only make them more angry.

Some interesting info, and of course opinions, it seems that common sense would dictate caution when traveling in general, I think asking a question just to get opinions from long time residents is legitimate. but I get the feeling the original poster was a scoundrel of some sort known to the moderators.

I have traveled a bit and by far the most dangerous place I have ever been is Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Where convenience stores have three inch thick plexiglas enclosures around the cashier. A little tongue in cheek, just in case anyone is from Harrisburg.

The original poster is in fact a junior member that has not been on the board for long. It was the original question the bought the best and the good out of people here, within the funny answers was a lot of common sense.

The guy is from Georgia, USA so he/she would of been looking at the normal US opinion (media related) that the Philippines is an unlawful place, full of crooks, terrorists, con men and women. Of course the question came under fire as we ex-pats especially those that have been here a long time. Does the guy think we are stupid to live in such a dangerous place or are we so brave. Well the guy just had to lurk around on some of the threads a small while to have the question answered by his research. So of course he had his leg pulled.

But the truth was there for the guy to see, yes we are brave to risk tummy upset, hygiene of course is questionable within most 3rd world countries. We are also brave enough to admit even those that moan we actually like it here, some suffer like saints lol.

We now the chances of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and don't shake hands with terrorist or to many crooks. One has to be street wise in Dumaguete City as the people who are natives the smiling gentle people. The guy after laughing a lot knows like most of us do, its safe to walk the streets But do not expect to much off the police when you become a rare victim of street crime or any crime. Thankfully there is not much and its mainly drug related and Dumaguete is 50 times safer than Manila or some of the other big cities. Burglary is the only really thing that requires thought on security it exists I know I caught a thief in my house only a month ago and a month before that an American friend had his house burgled while he was asleep (no bars on the windows etc).

My thief sneaked in whilst I was on the internet in a back room and my partner was in the shower. Of course the front door was open and not secured and also the main gate. I have now installed burglar alarms and security lamps.

Its of course also the warnings from the embassy's that give a false picture of being safe in area's such as Negros Oriental that creates a need for some to ask if its safe in tourist areas such as Dumaguete. Its safe but keep your hand on your wallet, mine is on a chain. I had one pinched in Cebu 5 years ago, since then the chain. However the chain was more useful in mainland China where I caught out two pick pockets both ran faster than me, but not with my wallet. lol.
