I totally agree Roodey I cant talk about the birth of my son in Dumaguete for one I am still traumatised over the ordeal and very angrey what was surposed to be the best time of my life ended up being the one of the worst exsperiences of my life!!something that I will never be able to forgive till the day I die  , And the second reason why i cant talk about it is because I was threaten by a certain doctor they threated to file a case against me the next day whilst I hadnt seen my son and my girlfriend was still undercare after major operation she was hysterical,Put it this way if the same situation had happened in uk the doctor would have been automatically dismissed, fired, sacked, termination of employment with imediate affect,Sory cant say no more otherwise ill probably be shot,It was like going back to the 1930,s ,It has sadly affected my relationship badly and maybe one day will be the cause of our break up,

If it is not an emergency situation, I would suggest booking a flight to Thailand. They have world-class medical facilities and only slightly higher prices than here.

My experience with Philippine hospitals as been universally disappointing and at times terrible. (And those hospitals include Cebu Docs, Chong Hua and Makati Med...all of which are supposed to be among the best in the country.)

Compare that with Bangkok's Bumrungrad International:

Good advice. My two experiences with the Philippine health system - Bacolod and Tagbilaran left me convinced it is pretty hopeless expecting anything resembling competence. My wife is a nurse here in Oz, and she's really hot on the issue of lousy medical standards in the Philippines. As in none....

Being Australian now, used to world-class treatment for free or at little cost, she's really put off about moving 'home' lately. Not to mention the recent growing hobby of expat murders in the Visayas.....rapidly rising cost of living...poor exchange rate....and global crisis causing the retirement accounts to go strongly negative...Likely wind up staying here in Perth and flogging our Negros property at some stage. Oh well, I can see the yearly trip to PI will have to do....Diving here in Oz up north is better anyway....actually have fish, even big ones....

Yes interesting posts. DG tell me your horror stories about the hospitals in Cebu please. The Cebu Doctors semed to me to be pretty much on par with Royal Perth but I'd be interested to hear otherwise.

A trip to Bangkok might be ok for elective surgery but unlikely to be an option if you are really sick. Some of my wife's workmates have been there for cosmetic surgery.

Hi Garbonzo. We are in Perth too. Our Philippine base is in Sibulan. Unlike you we are counting the days until our youngest finishes high school so we can spend most of the year in the Phils. One of the considerations for us about where to live is the medical facilities which rules out Dumaguete and I was hoping Cebu might be ok for hospitals.

We have a kinilaw, bbq, beer and tanduay night at our place in Rivervale (near the Burswood Casino) about once a month on a Friday night with a group of good people who all have some connection to the Philippines. You and your wife would be welcome to join us.

By the way I have read lots of your posts and we visited Bacolod in January.

    regards

    kevin

Ive had very good experiences in Cebu Doc and Chung Hua. I guess it all depends on the doctor not the actual hospital.......Therefore saying not even a great doctor stands a chance here in Dumaguete. If it requires surgery get off negros as fast as possible. I've been here a long time and have had plenty of first hand knowledge about operations in hospitals in this city ALL of them!

Cebu Doc's was the worst situation...but, as BikerDave said that was really the doctor's doing, although I am unimpressed with the facilities of all of those I mentioned. (And the hospital did nothing to prevent or punish the doctor for their egregious behavior.)

Again, go to Thailand...comparing the best hospitals in the Philippines to Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital is like comparing the accomodations of a native lodging house to those of Shangri-La.

Just as an example, my gf and I were both treated for pink eye, she at Makati Medical Center, then me a week later at Bangkok Hospital in Phuket. The difference in facility and service quality couldn't be more stark. Even celebrated Makati Med is mostly old, dingy and a chaotic labyrinth of a facility that might have been considered modern in the West in 1960.

In contrast, Bangkok Hospital in Phuket is fresh, clean, modern, even luxurious. You are greeted in the porte cochere by your personal concierge who, through the use of a wireless PDA finds a specialist available immediately to suit your needs, guides you to a lovely waiting area where you are served refreshments and serenaded by live music until the doctor can see you and while you wait for any test results (if required). Prescriptions are filled immediately in the hospital pharmacy and your driver is summoned and waiting for you just as you are ready to leave. The total cost for my treatment and medications was only about 25% more than what I had paid a week earlier for the same thing at Makati Med. Worth every baht extra!

Here is a video about Bangkok Hospital, Phuket:

Never been Medically treated at St. Lukes in Manila, but I've been to the place a couple of times and they looked clean and professional. I could be wrong.

But then again, the company I work for ( Multinational Service Company) uses and recommends St. Lukes.

Just in case you really need to have yourself treated in the Philippines.

    One of SUMC's clinics

Silliman Medical Center has grown by leaps and bounds and may soon approach international standards with its partnership with US healthcare institutions.

stu, I don't know you and your story, so I cant judge, but seeing Dumaguete in context of anything with international standard and US in context with healthcare made me really laugh out loud.

NO, Rhoody, before you close the thread, this is NO picking on the US, it sounds just too funny in echir's post
