Yes, we have been out for around 24 hours and just came back online. While brownouts are relatively normal, this one must be a record. Generally the unplanned outages only last for a few hours at the most. Planned outages are usually on Sunday and last from something like 8 am to 5 pm. Planned outages seem to happen about once or twice per month and the unplanned might be 2 - 4 times per month.

This latest was really bad. I heard that we might have been out for up to 5 days so we were getting ready to get stocked with ice. I'm super happy to have power back though now.

Of course, the most tragic for the Filipino's would have been the inability to send texts to each other due to dead cell phones.

Besides any rumors about a bomb and all that crap what was even on the local radio, it was basically a generator problem and the gas supply at a powerplant outside Dumaguete...

i was told it was a problem in Luzon, so they shut the whole of central visayas down, go figure, it's not the first time i've been stumped by things done in PI.

with the outside Dumaguete I wanted to say that this time it has nothing to do with NORECO, unusual but true...
the first in the morning was Visayas-wide. the long overnight-one was caused doe a different problem with the transformer in Amlan

I do not believe that we are getting the full story on this event. Here's the latest I can find on the cause:

"On Saturday, NGCP reported the power outage was brought about by the Energy Development Corp.’s (EDC) request to have the 230-kilovolt (kV) Marshalling to Tabango Line 1 shut down due to maintenance work on its metering equipment.

Sources added that Line 2 (of Marshalling to Tabango) tripped on Saturday morning.

At press time, though, NGCP said the cause of the line-tripping has yet to be determined."

This extracted from the larger press item posted at 1949 local time today:

Panay, Cebu and parts of Leyte already fully energized; Negros close to being fully restored

My own speculation is that the "trip" is of unknown origin. It needs, in due course, to be explained. Is there a terrorism possibility? This question requires a firm answer. Will we receive one?

The more interesting part is the follow-up. Restoring power on a wide-scale basis is simple and routine in more sophisticated "all electric" societies. Not so here.

The various generators and distributors did a pretty wild dick-dance all over themselves instead or remedying a fairly routine challenge.
