    grills

Sorry, I don't understand your message. I do live in Dgte, very near Hypermart, and not in a subdivision. I've been here 4 years.

    Grills

In the vast majority of cases, grills are to keep criminals out and your goods in, although I agree that an emptied home would definetively have its own charm...You might have been lucky so far, just do not push it!

DiverTim, You are considering a move to a completely different culture and therefore you must adapt and accept. Yes, you need the bars. But also ask yourself this... Do I need all of my possessions? If you take the Western attitude of having one more toy than your neighbor with you, then you are contradicting the reason you are moving and also creating a target. Start with the right mindset, design the building and property strategically and prudently, have the domestic help live with you so the place is rarely empty, and treat people well. A guaranteed perfect experience is impossible to predict but it is all about odds. So just put yourself in the best position you can and enjoy. And now it is my turn to add the sarcasm and dryness that the others seem to thrive on....You will have so many of your Filipinas relatives living with you anyhow that your doors will never be closed let alone locked! LOL

Is consumerism just a western disease? Seen plenty of it in Philippines tbf (I do agree on the point btw. the more you gather the more you got to worry about protecting).

I always thought the grils had a function as well with typhoons so you do not have objects crashing through and that is why it are grills rather than bars.

I guess there are other options like (roll-down) shutters, to close up your property or have the gril integrate with you window, a couple of dogs maybe. I do not like the grills either, decorated or not they are ugly and they are everywhere, you can't get around not closing your property, even in normal living areas with plenty of neighbours there are often lots of burglaries.

Just one more time re the grills

I do agree on certain good segments in this thread about grills... there are no fix pluses and minuses, I'd say that behavior is mostly what keeps anyone safe or vulnerable. Grills won't hold burglars out if they really are driven by need or just simply by want. Grills can be decorative for some while cumbersome for others. I have grills and when it's time to leave the place I feel better that the guard also feels better and so on. OTOH, when it's time to clean the windows, I can feel the cleaners are all stressed out and I feel it too...So grilling [to short cut the action of the word] is not a must and it can't be pushed. It's really a personalized issue. When living in a well-guarded vicinity, grills might not necessarily be a must and yet someone else living in a well-guarded area might still want the grills.

And oh! I like that point about grills not being bars--wow! And bars can't be grilled--however one may take that statement.

Life is so gooooood, grills or no grills. So there. Enjoy.
