I am moving my family to Dumaguete in June 2009. I need to buy a full medical and dental plan . If you can point me in the right direction ,it would be very appreciated. I live in the US now and my wife is from the Philippines . I look forward to meeting alot of new people after we get all situated.

The best insurance is money in the bank. Even if you do find coverage similar to what you are used to (highly unlikely) you will still need money in the bank to pay the hospital BEFORE anything other than the very basic of care will be given. You will pay the hgospital, then file a claim to your insurance company.

Simply put, no money, no care. It doesn't matter what insurance you have.

    Health Insurance

There are insurance options, Cliff, but "Shadow" is absolutely correct. No money, no care - that is the primary and most important message anyone can give you, even if you procure insurance. I happen to be retired military and many hospitals, physicians etc. "take" my TRICARE coverage in the RP, which really means I pay up front and hopefully get reimbursed. The "take" in the sentence above only means that TRICARE has approved them as an authorized provider. Very, very few providers of care in the RP will accept insurance up front as they do in the US, Europe etc. Good luck in your endeavors - and realize that just about anything "Shadow" posts will be exceptional advice indeed.

I heard that dental plans are better than dental insurance, is this true? What is the difference between the two anyway?

Sure, dental insurance is pointless if you don't make plans to go to the dentist.

    insurance ??? LMAO

Honest to God insurance and retirement funds are more worthless than the paper they are printed on. Even car insurance and you have to have that by law. You pay first then a few months down the road you may or may not be reimbursed. If you get become gravely ill in Dumaguete you will most likely have to go to Cebu to get anything even close to medical care that you understand.
