Kind of wondering what my fellow expats think. So I pose this question. "What is middle class in the Philippines?"

I don't care much about financial status, I sort of view every Philipino that is educated as middle class no matter what their worldly possesions. So more the middle class values people have (know how to set priorities, invest in the family etc), sort of split it up in non educated (real bad job possibilities in Ph), educated and rich (families that have acquired lot of land and/or properties). Flashy consumption status symbols say little, you can buy them on loans and they do not last, I also see them as a bit of a threat to society that seems to be way to consumer focussed,

I posed that question to a local acquaintance who described themselves as 'middle class'. His response to, "What is middle class in Dumaguete?"

"P15,000 to P20,000 per month family income."

Of course, they are a long-time family here who own there home so no rent, etc...

    Arie,

Educated, you mean by schooled? or Have been to college with a degree?

If you say, Educated and Rich, thats the upper class now.

I know of some who's been unschooled, but still make it big in life and everything else. (lots of acquired land and properties).

but then again, I'm not an expat........ so..... :D

yes educated, well people can educate themselves I guess, it is a bit of a hard question and I am sort of searching myself for the answer. I have seen people who do have money due to a family member working abroad who I would not consider middle class due to their spending and living patern and values. Middle class gives me associations with some financial conservatism, investing part in expanding incomme, not getting into loantraps, not buying everything on instalments, ensuring their kids get a good education and upbringing etc. Somebody who did not get a good education but made it anyhow will have some of these values and ensure his kids do get that education they missed out on.

well in short I do not know either but am interested to find out :D

PS. I am not an expat either :D

As a general definition, I think it's the same as it is in almost any other country in the world. As a number, it depends on where in the Philippines you are talking about.

I quess it could depend on what you value. A good education,a place to live, enough income to pay your bills and care for your family. if you are happy I would consider that rich..

    Jerry.
