I agree with Rhoody, medical problems later on in life in the Phils raises problems. Filipinos the best ppl on this planet. I will retire for a short time in the Phils. then move on probably to Spain to see my life out.

I look at it like this..

If I become ill seriously and it can't be taken care in Cebu. Then it would be to costly. I be happier passing away here where I am happy. Than is some kind of care facility for the elderly I seen those people. Not a life I would care to live. I came here for the freedom and I will die a free man. Most of our health problems are due to the life style we live. Better to change those than leave. but that is just how I see it..

I disagree with you a bit. retirement is usually a bit older than I am. So here comes the 60+ year old European retiree from a cold country to a place where the moisture is high, the temperatures high, the most likely the girl is young and hot.

The body won't adjust in any way... given the fact that most of the medications here are on the blacklist in our countries or not available it can't be considered as a retirement heaven.

Maybe it is still great for those guys, I would not judge that, but it's against any common sense

2 good (young) friends of mine just died in Silliman Hospital this year cause of the lacking knowledge and options, whereas in Cebu, or Manila and other PI-Cities they most likely would walk out of the hospital after 5 days...

I am with Teacher, no nursing home for me, that is so much a westernized commercial income producing commodity that most of the time in reality give very little care. I have also always been suspicious of medical care in Duma since my mother-in-law passed and she only had high blood pressure or that was all that the Doctors there seemed to be able to diagnose. Turns out there was a lot more going on with her. Yes if you get really sick there its best to get to one of the major hospitals in Cebu or Manila or else just prepare to meet your maker.

I have not been there yet, Coming in December. I'll admit most of what I know about the Phils I have learned from these boards and the internet, Also from talking with my GF. I also know quite a few Filipinos living here in my country. I admire the simple life and I have never met a Filipino I didn't like. I have no rose colored glasses and don't expect life to be easy If I should move there. I just noticed from my research that people seem happy there.

    Jerry,

Most, if not all of the negative and positive things you've heard are probably true. (those view by the way are different for each individual).

All in all, most(i say most, not all) filipino's are happy and content with what they've got.

Happiness actually depends upon the person.

So, whatever negative and positive you've heard, again is based on individual experiences.

I'd say, for those not happy/satisfied with living in Dumaguete, maybe it's time to move on. No point in making yourself miserable.

For those who are happy/satisfied, ENJOY!!! Have fun!!

Remember, we can't have everything in this world.

    jim eve,

indeed its rustic and slow at that. and as a local, i would prefer it stays that way. things are fast enough in life already. living in a slow pace, brings us back "down" to earth. sometimes slow is good.

And if others don't like slow and have no patience, let them go to the big city.

Dumaguete is great(for some people) as it is right now.

    peace!

    remember...

"Whatever comes our way, whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice. It's the choices that makes us who we are, and we can always choose to do what we like"

He puts it pretty positive (must be an American :D )

but I guess that if matters like health are a concern you can organize yourself to improve your situation, I am partly with Teacher, that what good to dwindle away in some senior home?, Philipines is in many ways a kinder place to the elderly, and make no mistake about the amount of medical errors in western hospitals they are certainly not all in great shape.

PS. sorry posted by mistake anyhow while I am not living in Phi

A pretty balance view point taken all round,a few surprises though. (Rhoody)
The encarta definition for Paradise is. "A place or state of perfect happiness"
"A place ideally suited to somebody".
I think it down to "Home is where the heart is" Philipino's here always talk of when they go home or when they retire to go back to the Philippines.
They never talk about the down sides and always have a positive attitude towards life, something we Westerner's can learn from.
Having worked all my life and paid taxes it's hard to think it would be eaten up in retirement home fees in later life.....JB
