Good morning....I'm Fran from near Providence Rhode Island (USA). I'm learning that the older I get the less I appreciate cold weather, ice, snow and sub zero temperatures.

I also seem to put people in 3 catagories. First those who LOOK at work their whole life but dare not touch. Then the lucky ones that love work and love life and somehow found a perfect balance of the two. As a friend said to me "Part of life is to enjoy life". Finally the third of which I am a member...work IS their life. Suddenly I should be retiring, BUT I'm lost. For over 30 years I took 3 days a year off (Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year's eve). To sit idle for any period of time seems 'wasted time'. To lie on a beach all day is a wasted day. Even now if I were to transplant to your country I feel a need to be producing something worthwhile.

Anyway enough ranting for now....I'm going to continue to learn about PI, the customs and culture etc.

    Thank you

    franh

    Franh....welcome on the forum.
It's good to add to your plans as well to learn enjoying life by other things than working, at least when working is not your favorable hobby.

Welcome Franh. I have to say I have always appreciated the saying "a bad day at the beach (or fishing, or...) is better than a good day at work." Perhaps you can semi-retire, say become a teacher or instructor of something or volunteer to help others become better at something if you want to stay active. Retirement should be rewarding whether it is doing nothing if that is what you desire or starting a business because you can. Good luck.

    3 AM here

I checked the weather...'feels like 106F in Cebu'..THAT is tough. I did end up surfing ?? via utube taking a ride thru Cagan.. and Davao. I agree 'leave the driving to us'. It was a motorized trike complete with sight, sound, and unwritten rules of the road. In fact I never saw a traffic sign or a traffic light. I did see a McDonalds and later a video for a housing development near a mountain top...very nice and well done. There was a mixture of English and Tagolog.

Volunteering skills is a doable. As manufacturing and quality control is my background perhaps some instruction at a school or college or business to share what little I can offer. That is most interesting. Thanks for the input.

    Welcome to the forum, franh.

Workaholic? Don't come here right away. Maybe for a visit - that's all for now. You see, you need some experience at being retired before you are ready for life in Dumaguete. Forget about a jobette, a modified career or a business. If you insist on doing any of those things - do them at home. Get those notions out of your system before you seriously consider a relocation here.

You will be astounded at just how busy retirement is! That said, get some experience of it. I spent a decade preparing for life in Dumaguete. I did not know it at the time but that is just what I was doing. I'm here now. I can take it. I'm prepared.

"cold weather, ice, snow and sub zero temperatures"? If you ever miss these, do what I do. Don't let your helper defrost the fridge as often as she would want. Look inside to your heart's content and quietly close the door when you have had enough. Smile!

On a cold night, I turn down the fan so that my wife does not shiver.
