I will be making my second visit to Dumaguete this year. The first time I didn't spend a lot of time in Dumagete per say but in Tanjay City and surrounding areas.
Anyway I've noticed the name Katipunan here and there. There is a Katipunan Mission Hospital I think, and a Katipunan bank. It also happens to be the last name of my fiancee. Can anyone tell me if what significance this name has if any?

    Thanks!

Katipunan, the patriotic secret society that in 1896 launched the revolution against Spanish rule in the Philippines.

You can actually check the significance of Katipunan at wikipedia, the significance is not just in Dumaguete but the whole Philippines, more specifically in Luzon where all it started, it's a tagalog word.

Katipunan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

By the way, the Katipunan Hall building you see in Silliman University is actually the old Silliman University Medical Center, I remember as a child we used to go there for medical appointments, etc. I was actually born in that building 45 years ago.

Katipunan is a tagalog word, therefore not a native Dumaguete family name. Katipunan Hall at Silliman University campus used to be the Mission Hospital, not Katipunan Mission Hospital, there never was one. It became Katipunan Hall after the Silliman University Medical Center began its operations. The reason it was named Katipunan Hall because it houses the classrooms for Pilipino (Tagalog) subjects...some Spanish, Literature, and Arts and Sciences too.
