Two that I can think of off the top of my head are Shakeys and McDos. Many of the Chinese businesses are not run by corporations, but owned outright by one family member. They naturalize one member of the family and put the business in that person's name. The Chinese work together to the better good of all and thrive, rather than the crab mentality found predominant here. I would seriously avoid a corporation due to this crab mentality.

As for Teacher's idea and Dave's point, they are both right. It is difficult for any one business to earn enough to support one here. This is something I learned a few years ago, and I am still here only due to that hard lesson. Dave is right also, find a niche that the locals cannot copy, otherwise you will have 3 like businesses pop up on the same street within two years.

I did look a bit in aquaculture, it is pretty well developed in Asia and the Philippines. tbh it seems much better developed than in Holland, where they are just starting it seriously but got a hard time competing with the well developed SE Asian industry, what does seem an intresting angle is the closed system (use the fishshit poluted water to grow plants, and use them to feed or to feed the food for fish) also very enviorment sound since most fish food is made still of fish from the sea.

just my two cents, looking into it, it became clear to me a lot of people know a lot more about it then me

    This why

My decisions are based on location of my home. I am 17kil from the nearest town which is Gingoog city. The nearest bakery to my house is 10kil. But I live in the middle of two Barangay’s and only pot pot boys selling old bread by motorbike. My wife’s family lives on our land now after the flood washed their home away. They aren’t well educated but I am very sure they can take care of Tilapa ponds and chickens this brings a little cash every six months and help feed the family at the same time.

There are a few long nose around but not enough to be able to make kind of business and it is Mindanao anyway how many foreigners well really come here. So my only customers will be Filipino’s so what well they spend their money on. There are no Phone lines in my area. But I also plan to buy and sell copra which will add a little more cash. But the prices are always up and down so you have to buy low and wait to sell high. Motorcycle parts & accessories shop is my pleasure business which it makes a little cash but again my only customers are Filipino.

    this is about fish farming

would you want to do any business with your family considering what you wrote before?

I do hope you do not plan to do any of it while not on the location, they likely end up just eating the fish and living of the money you send to feed the fish.

the blog I posted has some pretty decent info as well about how to set up small scale businesses

    Married

Plain and simple I'm a married man. I love my wife more than my own life. She forgave her parents and sisters even her brother. but will not forgive her brothers wife and in-laws who were the real crooks anyway they just used her family as pawns in there game. It is the Philippines blood is thicker than water. Honestly I have problems with this but nothing I can really do unless I leave my wife which I am unwilling to do. I'm a Catholic and so is my wife. This is the first time I have been married to my own faith. it is not our practice to just quit on each other.

I do not propose anything drastic but I would strongly advise against having any business ran without yourself being on site (and being the one handling the money), even chickens or fish, nothing good will come of it and it will just deteriorate the family relations.

If they already have the land, nothing is stopping them to grow veg etc., stay miles of any business ideas proposed by the family, especially ones that require constant money flow to contain them, not the business will be provide them with income but you containing your business and it will cost a lot more then if you just had given them the money they (will have to) take out.

I dare anybody to give a me an example where such an endavour ever worked, there must be tens of thousands ex-chicken farms set up for the family by foreigners, assuming that everybody in Ph knows how to do such a simple thing and fish ponds are the new chicken farms. It might not be malice at work but just the inability to count and make sure stuff gets sold and the cost of feeding does not exceed the selling price per kg.

PS. did you read the article about how to do it? it is not that simple if they do not have some experiance with it and do it correctly loads of things can go wrong, farming of any kind may look simple to an outsider but to do it well is another matter.

    Not a chicken farm...

The chickens are for the manuer I need to compost so I can create algae in the ponds for the fish to eat. Then scraps from the house for the fish as well. I plan to be there to handle all money. It will never work if I am not there to watch everything.

If you think of a "quick" business by starting a franchise like Jollibee or Mc Donald, think twice unless you have plenty of money.
