Is haveing a car needed or can you have a scooter and use taxis or rental cars as needed. I have been looking at the prices and think I could use a lot of taxi rides for the cost of a car.

Scooter = great for freedom come and go as you please when you please but a car is better in the rain and really hot sun,but then you got more traffic

When I relocated from Canada, I no longer needed a monthly transit pass. $K pesos per month buys my family and I a great number of tricycle rides. That plus my trusty bicycle are all that we need.

If I were to change this, I would clearly opt for a motorbike over a car. If you go the automobile route, you had better think big and four wheel drive to contend with the terrible "roads" outside the principal centers and arterial connections.

    Depends on your needs

It all depends on where you choose to live and what are your needs. If you only need to haul yourself and possibly your spouse around, and if you life in a place, where public transportation is abundant, then of course you don't need a car.

Self drive rental cars are generally scarse and much to expensive in Dumaguete and most of the Philippines, but tricycles are abundant, we have a few regular taxis, and it is fairly easy to arrange a "special trip" with a jeepney also.

A motorcycle is much easier to manouver or park in town and much cheaper to buy and run than a car, as it can do up to 50-60 km on a liter of gasoline. But obviously a car is nicer if its raining, it is much more safe, much more comfortable for long journeys, and it can transport far more people and larger quantity of goods.

Even if you decide to buy a car, you might want to buy a motorcycle as well, so that you can use it for all the occations, where a car is not needed or even inconvinient as in downtown Dumaguete. The saving of fuel alone will pay for the purchase of a brand new 100 cc motorcycle/schooter in about 15.000 km, depending on which car you are comparing it to.
