Hello to all, just an introduction to your forum. My wife (Philippina) and I live in Davao but want to move to Dumaguete in the next few years. We have friends in Valancia and enjoy visiting them often. We have 2 children a boy 8 and a girl 6. They are both very motivated students and I hope that we can keep the fire burning in their interest of school. I am a retired Military guy from Alaska. Been living here full time for a year now. The main reason we are looking to your fine city is for the college. I really like what I here about the place and I think a person has a chance out in that big world to succeed going through the system there. Looking forward to reading your comments on things around there. Take care Keith & Gilda

    Welcome Keith and Gilda.
Thks for introduction. What interests me is why you want to leave Davao and move to here. What did you judge here more attractive ?

    Welcome!

Welcome to the forum, Sailor! I haven't been to Davao but I have heard some nice stories about the place. However, I still wouldn't trade Dumaguete with any other city in the Philippines. Welcome to Dumaguete!

Hello Jellyfish, I find your area attractive for several reasons. I like the cooler weather up in Valencia area. The Dumaguete waterfront is a plus with all the resturants and clubs that are available. I consider that area safe for family activities, "always looking over my shoulder anyways", but the MILF, NPA activities are always in my mind. I love Davao and even have a beach lot on Samal Island which is very peaceful. I am thinking ahead for the education of my kids and to have a house that my wife can call her own to make beautiful, we are renting here for the last 2 years. I do like the Malls here and movie theatres which I would miss moving to Dumaguete but I think they are coming your way. Thanks Keith

Hello Rarity54f, Davao is a very beautiful place and I do enjoy living here. The mayor of Davao is doing a kick butt attitude on clearing the area of crime and staying off the MILF. Its a whole different ball game down in this neck of the woods. We are just planning ahead for the education of the kids and I like what I see at the University in Dumaguete. We also have friends who live in Valencia which we enjoy visiting at least twice a year. Thanks Keith

Welcome Sailorboy33, I have to love that name. Yours and my children are very close in age, however mine are growing up in the states, at least for now, and they have been to the PI already to visit the rest of their family. I would like to know if your children are picking up Tagalog or Visyan at all, or is it just not necessary in your household and in their current schools? I myself think it would be of great benefit for them but I know most of their relatives are at the same time trying to learn and practice their English. What a catch 22.

    Somehow the attitude that

"The mayor of Davao is doing a kick butt attitude on clearing the area of crime"

is a bit scary. That justifies the extra-judicial murder of at least 124 persons in Davao so far this year? There is strong evidence to indicate that these are extra-curricular police activities, tolerated if not actually supported by the civil authorities.

Maybe that is why you want to move here, non? Fear of the mayor and his apparent policies?

Je! Je! Je! That's more than nervous laughter.

Hello Davfitz, I can understand why you come up with that assumption but it is not why we want to move to Dumaguete. If I were afraid of Davao I would not have my family here. I just like the fact that other parts of the Philippines have less Religion based problems. In fact, the mayor of Davao makes it safe for all that choose not to be involved in crime. As a foreigner I have no input on any decisions being made here in the philippines, It is very evident here with all the support the mayor has and since the many years he has been in power that life in Davao has improved greatly, which includes safety of all nationalities. I support the mayor here full heartedly, at least someone is putting teeth into inforcement of the laws. Weather you agree or not. Thankyou for your thoughts. So much for politics.... Keith
