well crime statistics are publicated but no idea how reliable they are but they might give an impression about the relativity

would not give much notice to statements like

    http://www.nscb.gov.ph/ncs/9thncs/papers/publicOrder_PanelData.pdf

there is more if you look

    Thanks Arie.
The given link does give a nice explanation of a statistical research/method but does not give statistical figures/results. It was also over the period 1981-2000 (how are the 'not given' results over the last years (2001-2008), so what is the trend/tendency ?
It mentions the crime rate ranking between the different regions in the Philippines based on PNP data from the year 2001.
I can't call this (as you already concluded) reliable statistical data, but it was interesting to read the method.
Funny was to read that in the formula also a 'Corruption Index' is included !
How they define such index-figure (different per location/city ?) I would like to know. And why a corruption index is excluded in the crime rate for "RAPE", but included in crame rates for "Killing" and "Robbery and theft".
To compare crime rates here in the Ph. with elsewhere in the world, standard research and calculation methods are required.
Maybe they exist somewhere so we could stop assuming safer/not safer than in a given other country

yeah sorry I did not look on for the real data (and well tbh I am always very sceptical on crime rates data), just to show that there is stuff to find and that statements about a lower crime rate are likely from such data.

there have been loads of threads on crime and it all comes down to common sense really, I am suposed to live in a crime infested area (Amsterdam city centre) but I never have any real problems, you got to know how to avoid problems (look like a fat rich easy victim). Don't go walking quiet streets at dark, don't walk around with bulging large notes filled wallets, don't wear jewelry or carry around a lot of expensive gadgets, do not get in discussion with people in the street, stay in a relative well protected lodging, act like you know where you are going etc. (at least that tends to go if you do not know the local situation)

safe is a relative term. danger lurks everywhere and it can happen to anyone anywhere. here in dumaguete, i just suggest lots of common sense...and you will be ok here. it is pretty much a rural community here compared to cebu or manila. i have been in the persian gulf theater...kuwait and iraq...and it was safe..or maybe i was just lucky there. hehe
