So we, girlfriend and i, have decided to take a year or two to explore the philippines and surrounding places. We are from South Africa and coming over mid Jan 2010 and will probably stay the first 6 or so months in Dumaguete City. Any advise on what we need to bring with cause i have an idea of just bringing my laptop and snorkeling equipment. Planning to rent a house or appartment and buying a small car or motorcycle, would like one of those tricycles though. Anyways just wanted to intreduce myself,

    Thanks for the welcome

and the site, will sure come in handy. Now we just have to work out some logistics on how to get there and back. This rule of return ticket may prove a bit of a problem cause i haven't yet found a ticket that is valid for a year and i can not see how i am too get a visa for a year either. Where there is the will there will be a way!

shoes - if you have big feet
    electronics - much cheaper elsewhere
specialized sports equipment - limited supply here
food - if there is anything in sa, u crave then bring (although this is the hardest one to plan)

    Hi Ian,
    welcme to DI.

Most international Airlines issue tickets up to 1 year, also with open return-flight. If your airline does not do this you might need to buy a "throw-away" ticket to verify that you leave the PI again. You can book that online and print out your e-ticket. Those are starting from 800 Peso (less than 20 $US) e.g. Clark - Kota Kinabalu.

As a tourist in the Philippine Islands, your entry stamp is valid for 21 days. You can apply for a visa-waiver in each immigration office around the archipelago.

This waiver allows you to stay up to 59 days. 10 -14 days you before that expires you should go to the immigration and can extend your visa for 2 month if you wish to stay longer.

The 2 month Visa Extension is possible up to 2 years. After 6 month you need a ECC - Clearance when leaving the country. This relatively painless paper can only be proceeded in immigration offices of cities with a International Airport (Manila, Cebu, Clark, Davao). You pay this ECC - Clearance already with your second Visa Extension and it is written in your passport.

Keep all your receipts in the unlikely event you need to show them at the customs.

    cheers

    Rhoody

Thanks guys for all the info, i have a good mind to go to the pilippines embassy to arrange a 6 month visa beforhand so only to have extend it later the year. I am 6,2 feet tall so will it be an issue to get close there, cause i wasn't planning on bringing any, shoe size 10? i prefer buying such things there as they are beter suted for the wheather, here it is hot but very dry.

that is not possible as a tourist !!! 2 month is the maximum you can get, and it is in the PI less pain (unless you go to the B of I in Manila) then in any embassy.

It is a 20 minute act here and you will find a B of I in many cities.

That is different to your size... you will have problems to find your size in the province. Big mall's in Manila, Cebu or other Cities will have some.

Ok so it is best for me to

    1. come as a tourist and just extend my visa on such a basis
    2. buy some sandles and shoes here to bring with
    3. bring long trousers and pull overs with and buy the short sleave things there?

Got it and will do so then.

Must i get an international drivers licence or will my local one do?

Sorry about all the questions guys but thanks for the help!

    No problem,

that's why many of us are here on DI, to give info and/or ask questions.

There is nothing like a international driving license. That what wrongly is called so is nothing else than a translation-paper into english.

If yours is english you don't need that and you can use your licenses for 60 or 90 days (not sure about that). If you stay longer you need to apply for a filipino driving license before that period.

If you stay only 6 month, you have a good chance that you never see it... hehe. But carry your original driving-license and a copy of the application-form and you are fine.

    cheers
