Good day, I have been reading up a bit on the internet conections and found a lot of people complaining about speed and reliability of the internet services in dumaguete city. I know most of the things i have read are out dated so i have to ask again. You see i am a index futures trader trading the swedish, norwegian, south african and german markets and really need something reliable and stable cause things move rather fast on the futures markets. I will get a backup wireless but need a good stable conection between 3 and 11pm monday to fryday.

We want to move to dumaguete city because it seems to be a very nice place but if the internet avalability will not allow it we might have to move somewhere else. We want to stay on Negros island and i guess the internet is beter in Bacolod city.

Please advise cause i have to start making arrangements for our move over and so whould like to know which side of the island to go to.

Thank you very much in advance for any help
    Ian

Ps O and i am willing to spend about ps 4500 for a stable conection

I am a fund manager who invests in the options and Forex markets ...honestly, if I were looking fresh for a place to live in the Philippines, I would not choose Dumaguete. I have 2 connections, but sometimes (today included) both were out. It is rarely for long periods of time, but if you have outstanding positions that need action...well, I am sure you understand the frustrations.

If you are like me and require two fast internet connections, I suggest going somewhere that has both PLDT and Globe DSL (at high speeds) available. Those are the only two 'backbone' providers in the Philippines...everyone else just buys broadband from one of them. Dumaguete has only Globe. (PLDT does offer direct fiber connections to call centers and the like, but that runs P60,000+ per month.

Dumaguete has good internet connection for corporate accounts, in fact "The fiber optic telecommunications backbone of the Philippines is located in Oriental Negros. As a result, the province boasts of state of the art telecommunications facilities. Its geothermal powerplants ensure stable supply of electricity" (source). It is therefore a "Fiber-Rich City."

It should therefore be having some of the best fiber optics and stable power supply..

...but on personal internet, I have no problem with skycable so far. i can use it even without redundancy as it is up, in my experience, i would say 98 percent of the time. Then there is the new Cruztelco broadband. so basically internet companies and usage here is growing.

There is also Bayantel, which offers corporate accounts as of this time. But I heard PLDT will start offering individual broadband soon together with the offering of its residential landline telephone here in Dumaguete. There is PLDT broadband in Bais, Bayawan and Tanjay, and they should start rolling out in Dumaguete within a few months.

BTW, Globe has started to rollout DSL and broadband in Bayawan, so aside from Bayawan two other areas in the province including Tanjay and Bais have both PLDT and Globe. But Dumaguete will soon have three: Globe, PLDT and Bayantel (although maybe this is geared for companies).

Maybe it SHOULD have a stable power supply but it DOES NOT. Maybe it SHOULD have good internet stability and quality but it DOES NOT. I have lived in 3 cities in the Philippines: Makati, Cebu City and Dumaguete. By far Dumaguete has the least reliable electricity and internet of the 3. And I mean BY FAR the worst... (I don't ever recall a brown-out while I lived in Makati...we have 3 to 5 a week here...)

I have a business account...5mbps connection...still have reliability issues all the time and actually get the "within 60% of the maximum burstable speed of 5 mbps" about half of the time.

Sky will not work for me because they cap the upload at 80kbps...can't even run a single VoIP line on that...

Just a note for anyone who is really dependent on the internet: Bayantel buys it's bandwidth from Globe. There are only two 'backbone' providers (meaning they have their own connection to the world wide web outside of the Philippines. They are Globe and PLDT.

Bayantel does offer business DSL accounts in Downtown Dumaguete. If you are located anywhere outside of the downtown area, it is not available. Since they buy their bandwidth from Globe, if Globe is having a problem, so will Bayantel (unless the problem is purely local).

Oh, last I checked Cruztelco did not even offer an 'unlimited' plan...meaning you were only able to log in so many hours per month and speeds offered were very slow.

I hope Echir is correct that PLDT will come to Dumaguete and offer 'retail' (i.e. less than P60,000 per month) plans. That will be important for the economic development of smaller businesses here.
