I agree Maximus and thanks Jellyfish

The idea of educating Filipinas of the dangers associated with marrying anybody outside their culture or country is definately a good idea; as is the idea of marrying a Filipino, I suppose! Wouldn't you agree that such education should be a pre-requisite for marriage and not for obtaining a passport once married? We have been through the pre-marriage seminar at the Women's Center in Dumaguete as well as the Pre-Cana seminar required by the Catholic Church. Both groups enjoyed talking about foreigners marrying Filipinas.

I have personally lectured my wife several times on the dangers and downfalls of marrying me, a foreigner, since I didn't want her to jump into a relationship with her eyes closed and then dump me, or worse, stay with me while being unhappy. She, on the other hand, filled me in on her bad experiences with Filipinos (as well as those of her friends). I am sure you have all heard the stories.

However, none of this has anything to with my dilemma.

    Thanks again

    Steve

If you think that money grab is bad, please consider my current position in Thailand. I'm about to put an end to a long period of teaching at Thai universities - will actually be coming to Dumaguete tomorrow!

Its the end of my contract and this is what I have to do on my final day.
    1. Complete my days work
    2. Get to my local immigration office before it closes and have my visa cancelled and/or an entry put in my passport
    3. leave the country

All in the one day! - not even one day's grace. Of course i can "avoid any problems" by "buying" a 7 day visa extension for 1900baht.

At least what your wife has to do serves some purpose and wasn't just designed to skrew the foreigner (falang in my case). Its also much cheaper!

Yes indeed,it is all typical Philppines formality and very time consuming like everything else over there, but if You are living over there You have nothing but time on Your hands anyways, and if You really think about it,the extra cost isn't really that bad especially compared to the price You would pay for similar services here in the States.I too took the trip to Cebu with My Wife to have Her Filipino passport changed to My last name and She had to go thru the same silly seminar. As always,I always expect the unexpected and it didn't come as a surprise to Me,besides that We killed two birds with one stone because We were also there to apply for U.S. Passports for both of My Daughters at the U.S. Consolute, and stayed two night at the Water Front hotel where it was located. By the way the trip wasn't too bad on the boat, that is of course if the Weesum {or whatever boat it was} still has the non-stop trip going to Cebu.....Cheers..

I think there may be an alternative to going to Cebu........., go to Orientwind, the travel agent part of the Labas/Hayahay near the corner of the boulevard in Looc, Piapi & EJ Blanco drive. Explain your situation to either Macrena or Sanda and ask when the DFA(department of foreign affairs) "roadshow" is returning to Negros, and what you need to prepare for application. I'm not too sure of the schedules when they come over from Cebu, but I suspect every quarter. They run it specifically for people who aren't able or can't find the time to get to Cebu. Think the last one was held in Bayawan. Hope this is of help.

Why not get an agent to do it, the cancelling of a visa and your work permit, there are many around, "Ki Nieow, chi mai?"!!:D In Philippines actually, you have the much the same type of system (thanks ASEAN), when it comes to cancelling residence visas and work permits, I know because I have done it. Actually mine runs out here on the 25th Oct, so I will be in the same situation & I'm not even in Bangkok, up on the Laos border.

PS I'd like to know why NovemberRain had her last comment taken off? Was that you, Rhoody?
(Thought things were shaping up pretty well for a 'handbags at 10 paces duel' or something......!:D)

Yes I deleted it, I tend to be sarcastic in everything I say and it usually pisses people off, they can't handle it. I think it's good to challenge people because it makes them take a look at themselves. So I think they should thank me for that. But they usually wind up cursing me out.
Anyway, I decided not to be sarcastic anymore because nobody ever gets it.
