I plan on visiting the Philippines in July 2010 and retiring to s e asia in 2011. Does anyone have a short list of retirement areas that are worth checking out? Thanks very much for any input. BTW it was minus 6 this morning in Ottawa Canada!

If you mean "retirements areas in THE PHILIPPINES" than you could check with the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) and look to the places they 'support' for retirees. Google on 'PRA.Ph' and you will find valuable info, but maybe not enough for what you want.
Good luck and welcome on this forum.

Google on 'Jens Peters Philippines' and you will find one of the best books there are for travelers to the Philippines.
He wrote some good stuf and I believe it's recently again updated.

Depends on what your interests are...and what kind of climate you prefer (i.e. beach, mountains, etc). And also, it depends on whether you are married or single...

Honestly, if I were retiring I think Thailand would hold a great deal of appeal. The infrastructure, housing quality, health care, environment, food, costs and safety situation are all better there. IMHO, the Philippines only has the lower language barrier and better girls going for it. But, if you are retired and married, that's not an issue.

I've also heard a number of positive comments on Malaysia... more English is spoken there and they boast higher quality education, etc.

The best book on the Philippines

Yes, Lonely Planet book publishing company has the best book on the Philippines. It's a very well detailed book for traveling all over the Philippines. I think it's the best source of information to look at to consider retirement places. You can order their book online and it costs $27.99 it's worth every dollar well spent to get this book. Their website is Lonely Planet Travel Guides and Travel Information

yes i have heard this about Malaysia. So many decisions. I am looking at a solo excursion. Weather is a factor since I do not want oppressive heat. I suppose in any of the pallaces mentioned that the dollar would go far. Thanks for the opinions.
