    Hello from San Antonio, Texas,
I'm a novice here so please be gentle :D

I'm a wheelchair-using early retiree (age 55) who's interested in emerging technologies, scuba diving and possible relocation there.

Ideally, I would like to make the acquaintance of people involved in web development ( video / CMS, front-end and back-end) in a PHP & open source environment. Potentially, there could be significant contract work opportunities. I am assisting a company that has developed an amazing compression algorithm that delivers unbuffered or uncached hi-def video without a third-party media player requirement. The only requirements are a FLASH plug-in and a standard broadband connection.

If a business collaboration is developed, there is a possibility that I would relocate there part-time at least. There is a significant amount of web work awaiting performance-oriented contractors. Quite frankly, I'm tired of having to wear socks and am looking for a laid-back place with ocean views and plenty of fresh seafood.

Any and all information will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to learning more about what I have heard is an idyllic location.

    Respectfully,
    RD

If you need original music for the soundtracks of the video's send me a pm. It probably a bit early in the project for that but thought I would toss my hat in. My wife's nephew is soon to Graduate from Siliman in Computer Science. We will send him a note to contact you. Good luck with your venture.

    Howdy Tom,
Thank you for the reply and offer. Could possibly need to take you up on the music offer. I'm working on a personal web site detailing the technology initiatives going on here in San Antonio. I might need a rehash of some old Rare Earth riffs from loooooooooooooooooooooooong ago.
Thanks for the info and I look forward to learning more about Dumaguete and the surrounding area(s).
    Have a fun week!
    Rex

I have been a freelance web developer for around three years. Usually I work with ExpressionEngine which is built in PHP/MySQL and now runs on the CodeIgniter web framework. The only problems I have here is getting out of the "permanent vacation" mind set.

I'm not sure I would call Dumaguete or the Philippines in general an idyllic location. It depends on what you are looking for. I came here just for the sake of trying to live in a foreign country. It seemed like a good follow-up move to make after ditching the 9-5 and working from my home (equally big change.)

During my time here I have found some unexpected things to love. The biggest change for me is that life seems so much more simple here. I don't care as much about "stuff" as I did in the U.S. and I don't feel like I'm in a ratrace anymore. Of course, simple also means cheaper, so I can either work less or save more, lately I have been choosing the former.

In any case, go ahead and drop me a line if you like.

    Howdy Dude,
Thank you for the reply and information. Both are very much appreciated.

I understand about the web platform(s)/engines that you work from. The people that I'm assisting previously were working almost exclusively in an ASP/.Net environment I have convinced them to not only modify their business plan, but also the environment that they will be undertaking development projects in the future. PHP/MySQL seems to be the most robust for what they are attempting to do. Let's communicate via PM and I'll provide you with additional information and details.

I completely understand what you meant about your reasons for landing in PI. You seem to be doing exactly what I'm looking to do....ridding myself of all the "needless stuff." Just more crap to have to deal with.

Drop a line back to: sotxrex@gmail.com if interested in further discussion about potential contract work. And there could be plenty of it for a performance-oriented developer.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rex

Welcome Rex. One problem you may find is that this place isn't really wheelchair friendly.

    Reply about wheelchair access

    Howdy Kenny,
Thank you very much for the honest reply. I really do value that more than you can imagine.
Actually, most of the world isn't "wheelchair-friendly." However, that hasn't stopped me from traveling solo. It just requires me to do more in-depth research and investigation into anyplace that I'll be visiting....which I enjoy greatly. I've met some terrific people who have evolved into wonderful friends that I can proudly say precede the Internet. A slower pace, ocean views, less stress and NO SOCKS all drive my inquiries. :D
Thanks again for the info and I look forward to meeting some of y'all upon my visit.
    Respectfully,
    Rex
