This is so frustrating....I just spent a good deal of time writing a nice post and it timed out, logged me out and now I have to start over......

We have been in Dumaguete since Thursday looking at houses and have decided to have a house built. My husband's cousin has developed an area that has townhomes on one side of the street and residential houses on the other. He is offering us 3-4 lots, I think we may take the 4 lots. The house will not be big, but there will be room to expand. I want to build a nice nipa hut outside for guests to stay in when they visit. Anyway, we are paying cash, so there will be no monthly mortgage (yay!!) The subdivision is gated and will have 24 hour security. Many of the homes and townhomes are owned by family and friends, so my husband will already know many of the neighbors.
We have decided to send our daughter to Silliman, so we will be going there tomorrow and talk to admissions......unfortunately we really didn't even think to bring any of her papers from Manila....but we will see what they have to say. She completed 4th grade in Oklahoma and started 5th grade in Manila, but we had to take her out when it proved too much for her. We have been home schooling her, but I don't think we will have her completely finished with 5th grade, so when they test her I won't be surprised if they place her in 5th grade (which will be fine).
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for all the advice and help finding houses, offers to have my boxes shipped to their places, and everything else!! I am sure I am not finished with needing help!!
If anyone has any suggestions on shipping companies from Manila to here I would greatly appreciate it!!

Congratulations with the first step here: finding the right place/lot to live.
I don't know if Matiao (transport and shipping lines) also transports from Manila. Ask them.
If they don't do, they will surely be able to give you some references.

    shipping company

Thanks for the words of encouragement....we sat down tonight and duked it out and my husband won, we are going to just get the 3 lots (it will leave us with more money for nicer improvements inside the house). Thank you for suggesting the shipping company, are they based here in Dumguete? I will give them a call tomorrow.

    I won!!

I get the 4 lots!! We went to the subdivision site again today and even my husband agreed that if we want any kind of yard we have to have the 4 lots. Gonna have to tighten our belts and not get everything all at once he says, but we can do it. The subdivision is called Upland Townhouse (don't understand why it is just "Townhouse"), it is a one-street gated community with townhouses on one side and residential houses on the other. It will have 24 hour security, too. The house will be very small, too (much smaller than I wanted), but will be paid for, and we can add on later with the extra lot we are getting. We are planning on having a nice nipa hut (with a/c, etc....) built on our lot for company. We will be staying in one of the townhouses across from the house so we can oversee the construction. I have peace of mind that all of the paperwork is on the up and up since it is my husband's cousin (and owner of 3 banks) that we are buying from. Don't have to worry about someone showing up later and demanding payment on something we assumed was free and clear. Anyway, they will already start work on it tomorrow. We will not be back here until April since I have a trip to Oklahoma next month.
    Will keep you posted...............................

I have learned here some things Reedee:
One of them is to be never too sure things are like they look or sound.
It's always different from what you expect :D:D:D
But of course ..... "the cousin has 3 banks" so you don't have to worry :D:D
I thought so also of my Rural Bank
I hope that was not one of HIS banks. Wish you and family a lot of succes with the construction of your house.

    Thanks

Thanks for the well wishes......one thing I know and am quite confident of...my husband and his cousin are quite close and his cousin will not allow anything questionable to pass by. We will be spending time with them at their beach house in Bais the next time we come to town (April)....very kind and honest people who treat their family well. This is, at least, something we can rely on for now as being as it is represented to us. I am sure we have plenty of things ahead that we will have regrets over that we will wish we hadn't believed the person who was selling it to us!! Can't wait to come in April and start overseeing the construction of our house!! I am going to be here often asking for advice from you guys, because you have "been there done that", and I totally respect that!!
