Don't let others discourage you! What you are planning CAN be done and a lot of money can be made!! The 1 year failure rate, even in the U.S. is 50% for new businesses, but with enough capital, homework, plain old hard work, and the willingness to do WHATEVER it takes it can be done! Look at all the successful businesses in the Philippines!! Here is a perfect example of what you are wanting to do and his success story! Rice Mill Business in the Philippines And he did it competing against too many Filipinos! I would suggest you contact him or go visit him! It would be cheaper than failure!!

And for all the naysayers...... Sugar is at one of it's highest levels now! 88,000P is what my brother in law netted from one truck load of sugarcane and that was grown on 1/2 a hectare!! Do the math!! That was with only one harvest! Some growing areas have multiple harvests a year! With the price of rice now, it is almost as lucrative too! You think land is too expensive to buy?
There are ALL kinds of leasing options! One is you pay money up front for a long term lease (5-8 years average) and at the end of your "lease" you get all your money back! It is more like a loan where you hold the land as collateral and get to use it until your "lease expires" and the owner pays you back. In some cases the owner doesn't have the money too pay you back and you can continue to use the land until he does! Killer deal! Sharecroppers will work the land for you for a 50% cut and you pay for seed and fertilizer too if you don't want to be involved in farming.

Think outside the box and it CAN be done!

    God knows I respect you.

I have always found you a very intelligent person and I respect your opinion garbonzo I swam with the sharks before and learned to survive but only by the skin of my teeth. I really do understand my chances are low. But for some reason I just can't give up. I just spent a couple of weeks there in Bacolod city and the local area and looked around very closely. I have a greater chance of making it there than in Mindanao with the ways things are going in Mindanao I don't see any future there. But the one thing I know it is always best to be the Middleman if you are in Business. let alone I don't really have much choice I am to old to try starting over back in the states that would be impossible. The older I get the harder it is to get a teaching position. In a few years I will be out in the cold because of my age only able to get low paying employment which is just enough to live. I feel it would be better to throw myself to the sharks. I still plan on working for six more years here now. Then go back to the Philippines I guess I could move my money to an off shore account and try to live on it. But I just don't know just sitting around and doing nothing is not really me email me I will give you the whole plan. Loong.Gingoog@gmail.com

I lost my daughter there. I lost my money there. I just will not let them beat me. They will have to kill me first I am not sure why I feel this way but I do I guess it feels like I have been challenged winner takes all thing. I really don't know.

Drying of palay is mostly done on a dryingfloor in the sun, very few traders have dryers.
It takes a lot of skill to dry palay to perfection.
If it is to dry,the rice will break during milling, if it is not dry enough there will be black spots on the rice, but most farmers will dry the rice by themself.
It is indeed risky business that is completely in the hands of Chinese traders.
Be aware that Chinese traders are giving credit to their customers, if you don't you will not have any customers at all

Teacher, I would align myself with those that would encourage you to go forward with this venture. I have been in several businesses thru the years, most were successful, and I have taught entrepreneurship also.

The best way to learn a business is to go to work for someone that has a thriving business, even if you have to work for free. You have no money at risk and if you decide you don't want to be in that business then you just quit and go about some other venture. I learned this from a guy that wanted to start a bakery, he went to work for a baker, awake at 3 am, mostly just carrying items and sweeping the floor but after two weeks he decided getting up that early was not his cup of tea so he just quit and made a few bucks at the same time.

Learn the business inside out because you will make plenty mistakes even if you do know the business.

    Good luck on your venture.

    Well it is like this..

Muddyfeet not a soul has tried to discourage me at this point. I know garbonzo is not keen on the idea of me doing business in Bacolod but he is also a longtime friend and is only looking out for my best interest. And why I am here in Asia is a story to long to go into. I work as a English Teacher I really don't like care for the job much but it makes money and I not to bad at it..But there is a age problem in which has already started to rear it ugly head. I can't see myself not making a living. I really have no place to go but back to the Philippines so it is a sink or swim thing. I really have to figure out a workable plan to make a living in the Philippines for me and my family. So even if someone says I can't do. I have to find a way I have no other choice to make. I will not give up my family.

    Hi Teacher,
Garbonzo has also a point. For me i dont want to invest a big money for capital. small business probably for everyday living is ok. But i also know a lot of people that is successful on their business. That depends of what kind of busunisses you are into, how to deal your people and the government laws which is sucks! I hope that whatever way you decide, everythings gonna be ok. Just be very careful. Good luck.

This really sounds interesting. You will have to follow some of your competitors trucks around to learn who the customers are and how much they are paying and if what you will receive will be worth all of the effort. If it is, you will then need to figure out where you can expand to and how much sales will you be able to generate and at what expense. You will also need to develop some trusted Pinoy associates. I am sure you know to incorporate takes a lot of trusted Pinoy board members. PI partnerships I know nothing about at this time. Maybe you can join the local Rotory to get in the loop at least and start making those associations and get some benefits of experience and networking.
