I am wondering, and haven't really heard, for Americans living abroad, will we be required to purchase health insurance under the new bill or will we be subject to a hefty fine? Just wondering if anyone knows..........thanks!!

Right now this is the language in the health bill concerning requirement to purchase insurance: In 2014, everyone must purchase health insurance or face a $695 annual fine. There are some exceptions for low-income people.

I dont see that as catastrophic and if you are living on a fixed income you would probably qualify for the exception.

I was approved for Social Security disability benefits only 2 months ago cause it took me 1 year to fight for what I paid into the system that is rightfully mine. I fell into the 2 year waiting period to get Medicare benefits. Prior to that, nobody would approve me for medical insurance even if I could afford it. I thank God that the Health care Bill was approved. It's about time that WE THE PEOPLE SAY NO TO THE GREEDY INSURANCE companies that kill many Americans each year by denying them the medical coverage that is most needed. Atleast I know that I will get my surgery late next year cause medicare covers it. I don't know the facts yet, I must assume if your getting Medicare and Social Security then you would be considered low income and probably will not be fined. My big question is, what happened to that meeting with President Arroyo requesting to President Obama that Medicare benefits will be available to American citizens in the Philippines? How can the United States Government deny you Medicare benefits in the Philippines if it will be law to have medical insurance ? I wish that the American expats would talk about this subject.

    Good Luck

Good Luck Steve . You will be in one of the longest lines you have ever seen . Remember socialized health care doesnt work . Hasnt worked in Europe , canada or elsewhere .Socialism doesnt work . Even if it does work , it will only last until the entire system colapses . 45% of what could be working people are on some kind of government assistance , including illegals that are here in our late great country . We have given our industrial base away . We are not making anything here anymore . 90% of what we buy comes from somewhere else . My point is simple . Enjoy all of your entitlements cuz they will all be gone very very soon . P.S. Thats why im leaving this giant mess of a country . A country that I once proudly served in the armed forces I might add . So please dont come back with some spue about why or why not I can or cannot speak badly about this country . I have lived here for 52 years . Its done . The party is all but over . Way to many people are on the government nipple and it is just about dried up . Again Steve , ..... I wish you the best of luck with your impending surgery .

    health care bill

This health care reform bill is going to be the first giant step of making the U.S. into a socialist country.....Obama's agenda all along. It is going to be sad to see what happens over the next decade as these rules go into effect. I am glad my mother passed away in September and will not be at the mercy of this new bill, where they will pick and choose who is worthy of treatment and will survive. If you are old or very ill, they will have the right to deny payment and/or treatment all together if your life is not deemed worth it. I am not crazy, either, of my tax dollars paying for abortions, just the thought of it makes me ill. Obama supports partial birth abortion, and if you aren't familiar with it, it is a barbaric form of murder of an innocent. The baby is delivered, except the head, and as the doctor holds this wriggling life in his hand, he jabs a very sharp instrument into the base of the baby's skull and sucks the brains out, thus killing it. This just makes me sick, that we will now be forced to give money for such things!! No, this is not a good day for Americans.....a leap backwards, we are seeing the beginning of the demise of the country we all have grown to love.
I am sorry if nobody agrees with me....just my opinion....everyone has their own. I am very saddened
    .

As if that's not what insurance companies have been doing all along. Its sad that conservative mouth pieces are able to brain wash so many.

    Pedro is right

This socialized health care will work for a while . Until everybody sucks the nipple dry . Then like I said before , its lights out for the good ol USA . Which wont take too long my friends . I give it about 5 years , I dont have as much faith as Redee does . Lol . Again , ill be in Dumaguete living the good life . PS this is coming from a die hard libertarian . You couldnt pay me enough to be a part of either of those two worthless parties that have everyone believing we live in a democracy here in the states . What an embarassment .

Ted Kennedy: Health Care “Has Been The Passion Of My Life”.

    "
. . .quality care shouldn’t depend on your financial resources, or the type of job you have, or the medical condition you face. Every American should be able to get the same treatment that U.S. senators are entitled to.

This is the cause of my life. It is a key reason that I defied my illness last summer to speak at the Democratic convention in Denver—to support Barack Obama, but also to make sure, as I said, "that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American…will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not just a privilege." For four decades I have carried this cause—from the floor of the United States Senate to every part of this country. It has never been merely a question of policy; it goes to the heart of my belief in a just society. Now the issue has more meaning for me—and more urgency—than ever before. But it’s always been deeply personal, because the importance of health care has been a recurrent lesson throughout most of my 77 years. "

Give it a chance. Time will probe who is right.
