Hi.. My husband and I are planning to move in the Philippines this year. I was born and raised in Iligan City, however, my husband and i would prefer to live somewhere in cagayan de oro or dumaguete. We have to city to choose from. Cagayan de oro's land price is kinda pricey but closer to my folks, dumaguete somehow got more american or foreign people. We have four kids ages from 8, 7, 5 and 4. I need a good school for them where they can easily get along with. Also, I am currently studying in the US , finishing up my pre medicine. I would like to find a good medicne college in dumaguete. i heard Siliman is really good. Any suggestions will be helpful and much appreciated...

    thanks,.

Start reading some of the earlier posts. All of this has been covered in pretty good detail and no there are no updates. Silliman is pretty good at preparing you for the Nursing exam. A good friend of ours graduated from there and is currently a well paid nurse in the US. Since you have started in the US you are probably well ahead of your classmates. Don't know how Dumaguete land prices compare to CDO but the closer to the city the more expensive it gets.

Are you looking for a Medical School or a Nursing program?

Silliman is the only university to house a medical school in Dumaguete. There are a few Nursing programs though.

If you research the archives there has been extensive discussions on the various private elementary and high schools in Dumaguete.

    Hello,

Thanks for the information. Husband and I did research about things, and we decided to put Dumaguete as our choice of settlement in the future. I am looking for a medicine school or college. I did few research about Siliman University, and i like it . Will be flying to Phils. next month. My husband I plan on visiting there sometime on June. Hoping to meet new friends and meet the people of Dumaguete...

Bacolod is closer but Cebu is faster.
Reason is the road between bacolod and Dumaguete is still (years already !) under construction at a lot of places. At some area it takes sometimes more than 2 hours to pass a traject of only 50 km's.
    My estimates for average times:
Bacolod- Dgte by bus: 6 till 7 hrs
Cebu - Dgte by bus (incl. the ferry): 5 till 6 hrs

    Btw......welcome on our forum.
Tonight we have to go again to Bacolod-area (hmmmmm)

Ecelle, welcome to DI. My two cents about choosing a Medical School. If you are planning on staying in the Philippines forever then your choice of Siliman University is fine.

If however, you are planning on going back to the US for further training, I suggest you consider these pointer.

I know you have been through this in the US since you are already in your senior year and realize that getting into a good or even a mediocre medical school in the US is very difficult. Has nothing to do with how smart you are, there's just not enough medical school available to enroll new graduates.

Applying for residency training after medical school is just the same. To get into a good, competitive, specialty training,(opthtalmology, dermatology, orthopedic, etc) you almost have to be a US graduate. Once in a while exceptional foreign graduates do get in, but rarely. So consider what you want to do. If you are thinking of going into general practice, family practice or internal medicine, then good luck competing with other foreign graduates who will come in with impecable credentials and USMLE score around the 98th percentile.

"Impecable credentials" - that's the point of my response to your post. Consider the international reputation of the Medical School you are getting into. Is it considered to be at par with US schools or schools in India, Middle East, Canada or Europe or recently the Carribean Medical schools. Will you get the training you need to get to the 98th percentile USMLE score?

International reputation results from the cumulative experience of US hospitals training programs from training graduates from various medical schools from the Philippines and other countries. How many Siliman graduates are successfully trained and practicing in the US compared to graduates from the University of the Phlippines, University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University, University of the East, etc..all in Manila. I wouldn't be surprised if the number is much smaller. There's a lot to consider here so get busy and
good luck on your future and eventual choice of a Medical School and on your planned move to Duma.

PP is correct. Most Silliman educated doctors are trying to become nurses in the US because the have repeatedly failed US Medical boards. But, in fairness to Silliman, this is the case for almost all Philippine-educated doctors attempting to migrate to the US.
