When Rarity resurrected this thread, it reminded me to provide some updates. Due to a recent injury I have been back to SMC, Chong Hua in Cebu and Makati Med. Silliman beats Holy Child for me, but really only due to the new doctor's offices and more convenient parking. The hospitals' themselves seem to be pretty much on par and that is still lacking.

Chong Hua is better than Cebu Doc's but I still remain relatively unimpressed.

Makati Med has improved it's facilities a lot in the past 3 plus years since I was last there. It's still below western standards, but they seem to be going in the right direction.

On a side note, many times I have read how underpaid Philippine doctors are. The orthopedic surgeon at Makati Med had a digital picture frame on his desk running a slide show of him with his newest toy, a Lamborghini Murcielago! (That toy would set one back about P12 million before the import taxes are added!)

The procedure he proposal to do for me would net him (excluding hospital charges) P100,000 for a roughly 1 hour procedure. He schedules surgeries for a couple hours a day, six days a week.... For some reason, I doubt he will be going back to school to retrain as a nurse and migrate to the US!

    hospital

Holy child is quite cheaper in terms of room rate this time. SUMC charged 2,500 per day in their new building. watchout with SUMC if you intend to be confirned yourselves, better wait 6:00 am to 5:00pm or else outside this time you will be charged whole day.

but what is good at SUMC are: good ventilation and spacious rooms, more spaces for parking and much cleaner.

    Best Hospital?

I've been to SMC 3 times since they opened the new wing.
Private, clean, decent sized room, excellent ac, color TV, private CR with useable hot water shower.

The first time was the same week the 3rd flr was opened to receive patients and my doctor advised me the "going rate" should be 2,500 Php daily, but since it was brand new, there was a promo and the room rate would be reduced to 2,000Php daily! LOL!

The next two stays I was billed a daily rate of 2,500Php.....but at the end of the stay, on the final accounting, each time there was an unasked for credit given of 500Php daily - reducing the room rae to 2,000Php daily.

My asawa also had to stay for 3 days for a miscarriage....she did not receive any type of room rate credit on her bill. Go figure.

We both also have Phil Health........and BTW, we just received a check for 2,500Php from them for an unexplained "billing error" they found during my last stay.:D

You can still opt out of going into the new wing and stay in the older section...private room ,a/c,color tv, private cr = 1300Php daily.

Is there efficient rapid transport to major hospitals in Manila and Cebu or even internationally? SOS etc.?

How about international health insurance participation? I had big problems elsewhere in the PI.

I don't think there is a hospital here that honors International S.O.S Cards.
Maybe others. I do have SOS and our company has an agreement with them in cases like this.

    1. We get a precertification (for planned confinement, ea. operations and such)
    2. For emergency, we are given 48 hrs by SOS to get a letter from the Hospital.

Then, SOS communicates with the local hospital, agreeing that they settle the bill directly(bank-to-bank).

Maybe check with your Medical Service Provider.

THanks, I was interested in SOS service only for emergency stablizing care and evacuation to a qualified hospital but last time I was hospitalized they demanded up front payment from me, no deals with my "Global Insurance".
Do any of the hospitals have a helicopter pad?
