Doesn't matter which way you look at it, all of the above are true in one way shape or form. Rhoody's right, the years of experience show you many different facets of Filipino Life. Accept that it is different and enjoy the "real living" that it brings you.

Hey, we are in Asia, not in a comfy well ordered society in Europe, Ozz or USA. Things work differently here, accept it, it is what makes life interesting, if not frustrating.

I wake up never knowing what the day will bring. I do not mow the grass on Sundays and talk about that to my mates. I have a life, and it is real, living here is "Living". I cannot talk to my mates back in Ozz, they simply do not believe what happens here.

Remember, not many countries left in the world where one can have six or seven beers and drive home without fear of being branded a "Monster" or the "Scum of Society" and fined, jailed, or whatever.

The good always comes with the bad, when the scales tip too far to the "bad" side, too many times, time to leave?? Right?? But how many actually do. We all love it too much

Ha! its not about pink glasses. I have met several even here in the states that I would not want to be with, behavior is bad etc..... But someone still things they are the greatest.

My comment is just what it is. I guess they are meeting the wrong filipinas. Its not a contradiction of the earlier comments rather an addition to them.

Overall of the dozens of filipina I have met both here and in Duma there are only a small selection that come close to the statements in the OP. Most would fall under the comments of the other posters.

Of course I could say the same about the american women I have met. That was why I liked panday's post. Seems a bit more balanced.

It just seems at times that the forum becomes a b_tch fest about all that is wrong with the place. I tend to look past that and say to myself that with all that stuff wrong there must be some things that are very good about the place as well, otherwise all the expats would leave.

    :p:D

I actually know many who would, if they could, but most of the lifetime-savings are now in the name of the "house-keeper" :D

    ... finally a real reason ... hehe

There are not many countries left where old, fat ugly guys can get a woman under twentyfive to pay them much attention unless they are a customer for some reason and I don't mean "that" reason. It is all in the way you chose your partner. If you are only looking at the beauty then you may be missing what is in the brain. Trust me I have made that mistake too. When you do not have a good dialog with your future partner and talk about what is really important then you are just gambling or really don't care who your partner is so what you end up with is not what you thought you were getting. I see more expat Pinoy's choosing other Pinoy's as partners over other races, cultures when they are overseas and they are still together. I think that says alot about their traditions and outlook on life in general. But to stay together does take work, commitment is not for the weak or lazy person.

We tend to ignore this in search of the exotic.
My mothers advice, which I chose to ignore, was to marry a women from the closest background as possible in wealth, race, religion, locality etc. In other words marry the girl next door, I married twice, Japanese and Korean nationals and learned that no matter how well they speak english their "concept" of the words are different.

I kind of agree with Pilot. I won't go into how I met my wife, but suffice it to say that we weren't Pen pals, internet dater service, or introduced through some church group. We've been together 30 years now. Two of our daughters are in the States and our house is overrun with grandkids. Life doesn't get much better than this. Do we have misunderstandings and conflicts about her extended family? Sure, but it's nothing compared with what I used to get from my Irish American first wife. As for aging well my wife can still turn heads 30 years later. Any Americans should take a look at whats pushing shopping carts through wal-mart for comparison the next time they are in the States.

Not to condone the actions of those who have taken advantaged of others nor criticize those who have fallen victim to such schemes. My point is merely to offer, perhaps a different perspective on this issue or explore the possible cause with your input.

Many foreigners or even returning residents have fallen to some kind of schemes one way or the other but these schemes have but one purpose; to separate you from your life savings. There are those that, as previously quoted, “lost the shirt off their backs”, but there are also many who have lived in the Philippines happily and successfully.

The question we should be asking perhaps is what separates one group from the other. In today’s information overloaded and tech savvy world, almost everything that you need to know to prepare for your move to a different country and survive in a different society is just a mouse click away. Several embassy sites even offer tips on what to and what not to do in your country of interest. Yet despite such warnings certain cons like the one described above still succeed.

Is it ignorance or stupidity? Ignorance has a cure unfortunately stupidity does not have any known remedy. These cons are a contest of wit. If one uses his pe**s to think rather than his brain, is it any wonder why the other party always wins. Isn’t there a saying that goes like this; “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me”.

You do not arrive in the Philippines on day with all your money and wake up the next morning without a single penny in your pocket, unless of course you were robbed. These cons (not unique to the Philippines) take years to develop and could be pretty elaborate, with different variations, a sick uncle, a dying niece, poor harvest, etc. Do not get carried away by your emotions and remember to always think with your brain, not with your heart or worst with that tiny soldier between your legs. You have no chance of winning if you do and remember you can only play the victim card once. After that whatever it is that you end up with, you fully deserve.

So again what separates these victims from the likes of Rhoody, Jim, Dave, etc who seemed to be doing well in Duma? Does this also happen to Expats married to upper/middle class, well educated professional women or is this uniquely more prevalent to those married to women that belongs to the lower strata, regardless of educational background?

Think you answered your own question higher up your reply, "stupidity or ignorance" or both maybe!:D

Ok, so I had a "lucky draw" (so far), but in the 5 plus months that I have been here, I have seen more than my share of the bad ones also. There are several within a stones throw of where I live.
And, I repeat my 2 favorite biker sayings (and thank you Panday for remembering)
and I'll clean them up for here:
    1. If it has 2 boobs, or 2 wheels, one day it will give you problems.
    2. Nomatter how good looking she is, somewhere there is some guy that is sick of her stuff.
(God, I hope Rudy doesn't read this, she will make my life miserable).
