general maint. tune-up, and the occasional repair...

Depends on how you define "good", like most other things here, you get what you pay for. When getting work done on a bike or any vehicle really, I always try to think along the lines of "how much is my life worth".

Question of the thread was 'Any "good" bike mechanics?' Sorry if this wasn't clear.
When dealing with any piece of mechanical equipment, sometimes your life or at least your current health depends on the quality of the work done on exactly that equipment, example:- brakes or the clutch or whatever, on a car or bike.
If I need to make this any clearer please let me know.
