Paying p5 to some guys desperate to feed a family = extortion ??? Jeez, get a life. The Philippines government screws £50 million ( 3.5 billion peso ) annually from the British government in "overseas aid" which seems to just evaporate. Now that's extortion.

sorry but you have got your terminology wrong, you may call british govt aid stupid, missapropriation, lining your pockets, corruption etc. it is not extortion. extortion is the demanding of money under duress or an implied threat of violence.
it may seem a small point but with your wealth of postings on this forum compared to my measley number the bar needs to be a liitle higher for you

sorry but you have missed the point.
at the traffic lights in cebu i will be approached every day by the same guy for 20 days in a row selling sunglasses. i say no thanks, he moves on
a mild annoyance, i come ot of robinsons dumaguete 20 times in a row and say no thanks i dont want your protection. what would happen to my bike, or myself, i hate to think.

the situation at Robinson's is; #1 If you don't want your bike damaged or you don't want to pay 1 -5 pesos....jump in to a Tri Cycle. #2. if you have a nice bike and you want them to guard your bike pay them P10. #3. If you have an older bike and want protection pay them 5 pesos. #4

so you are admitting that there is protection racket going on at robinsons and your bike will be damaged if you dont pay.

i am starting to think the situation you have in dumaguete is similar to the stockholm syndrome ( google it) . you have become so used to being extorted that you take it as a natural part of living in dumaguete and fail to see anthing wrong with it. after all whether you give a hooker 100peso or 5000 peso she is still a hooker. it is the same with an extortionist, the ammount does not matter, it is the principle.
sometimes it takes an outsider to say hey somethings wrong here.
possibly if they removed the minders from robinsons there would be a heap of locals wondering around in a daze holding their 10 pesos saying whats happening, who am i gonna pay, my life has been turned upside down etc.
the same reponses as when the berlin wall came down.
but dont worry as any one from cebu can tell you, there is a better life ahead for you

hey govoner...don't be so hard men...if you think paying a 1-5p is extortion in Dumaguete then keep out from coming to the city and stay at home for the rest of your life

    another opp

I'm thinking I can start a windshield cleaning service too at Robinson's....I'll have my guys stand right by the entrance of the mall with squeegies and rags in hand. As soon as you pull up into the parking in your car my guys will rush up to clean you windshield for 10p. If you don't want your window cleaned, just smile at them, tell them "no" & how handsome they looked and you'll be alright....and not to worry about leaving your car there, chances are nothing will happen to your car.......I think :D. Either that or you can take a trike instead :D:D:D

And if that's still not good enough, you guys can all stay home!!

To the GOVONOR! First of all I am from Stockholm, Sweden, and your reading about the Stockholm syndrome has nothing to do with Parking in Dumaguete. Please look up the meaning of extortion in webster dictionary and understand what extortion really is. At last I have to say, if you haven't moved to Dumaguete yet, please stay away forever. We don't need elements like you here nor are you welcome here with your stingy attitude. You are maybe in Philippines to take advantage of the poor Filipinos, and never give a helping hand to anyone nor giving 5 - 10 pesos to a parking lot attendant. SHAME ON YOU. You are the kind of person who gives the good foreigners a bad reputation in Philippines. You really SUCK MAN!
