Not needing any info as I have been going to Calbayog on and off since 1981.

I was just wondering if any others on here have been there.

I hate that idea, I could never live in a retirement home in the PI, not the reason to be here. For the average retiree that has to be a scary concept, pack up or sell everything you own and move thousands of miles from everything you know to be cared for by someone who will not understand your culture or way of life. I am sure it is a tough sell which produces low margin returns.

Thats the hard part, trying to stay close to family. I frequent Dumaguete because of family but someday I may want to go to a more secluded area for the peace and quiet and to get away from everything. I can live simple as long as I have shelter and a place to grow and raise food. This is the appeal of the PI for me. My real dissapointment is that the region is so fished out. If they could restore the fishing and limit industry where it will not harm the rest of the land, the rest of the problems would be more bearable.

    Confused?

If you read my post, I asked if anyone else on here had been to Calbayog City. Ricado stated that he has passed through there a few times and thought i was asking for information.

My reply was that I have been going there since 1981 to visit Asawa family. Just trying to have conversation in regards to this thread on why live in the Philippines.

    Hope that helps.

I think when it first came to be in the newspapers, I thought it was a good idea. You have to remember that a good percentage of retirees are on limited income. They may not have family that will care for them. That maybe for health reasons they need to move to a warmer climate. in the long run, it is still a good idea when you consider your options. For example the retirement homes here are very costly. Living on a tight income might not work compared to living in the PI.

It will be hard not seeing my grandkids grow up daily or weekly. This might be the kicker if in fact spend more then 3 months at a time in PI. Then again, who knows what will happen within the next 18 or so months. I may decide that I do not desire to live in PI. Just visit from time to time.

Thanks everyone for your comments, a wide range of ideas and views. A further thought, I have had.

If you are on a limited income, ie retired, and want somewhere cheaper to live there are many options. I thought the Philippines was cheap, but now am thinking otherwise. Recently in the Philippines it seems to have become more expensive, for example my last visa renewal cost over 7,000 peso with the new I card. I also notice food has increased in price, beyond what I thought was reasonable. If you travel around the Philippines there always seems to be another tax, port fee, or add on.

To a degree it does not matter if I get 28 baht or 40 peso to a dollar (Australian), its what I pay, and I think now Thailand might be cheaper to live. Here in Chang Mai the range of services is amazing, can eat Italian, Indian, Vietnmese etc etc. Motor cycle rental is easy and cheap, 150 baht a day. If you like a beer there is an enormous range with many bars offering numerous international tv sport channels. Not to mention streets being swept on Saturday nights and rubbish collected. Maybe I am having a bad run in Philippines lately.

As they say in LOS - same same but different.

Both locations have their pros and cons. It all comes down to what you desire and need. You are correct in that the costs in PI have gone up.

If I was to compare the costs of items from our trip in 2007 and 2009, they have gone up from jeepneys, AC Vans, to every food item you can think of. The Philippines is no different then any other country with the economy that way it has been over the last few years.

I have never been to Chang Mai, but have heard so many positive aspects of living there. If I had to sit down tonight and make a choice, I would go with staying where you are now.
