To Do OR Not to Do! THAT! is the Question?

:smile:Barrio Runner. I read your posts with great interest, I have no axe to grind with all that has been said at all. I do, however, wonder why we all make a fuss over the minutest of details on our retirement or just relocating.
The Whole world changes daily, I have been here in Spain now for 5 months working, They have dipped from Good to bad to indifferent, I made a Statement earlier today that I will say to you, I have lived here in Dumaguete now for 20 years, sure things get Good, bad and certainly indifferent. I agree with your last comment Wholeheartedly BUT will ask WHY? do we still do this comparison bit. I love it here, I know that I get away from time to time but it is still the best on offer to me. Can you agree with me here?

I was responding to Sid in regards to his questions about which location is better. Sid brought up some good points. He has some concerns and wanted to throw them out there for discussion.

As for being concerned about the little things in life or relocating to a new country, failure on one's part not to do his or her homework before making that move will create undo stress and problems. Right or wrong?

For me, I am used to the Philippines and the area where we will build our home. I am used to traveling around the PI. The concerns I have are not with shipping anything from here to PI as it will either be given to my kids, put in storage or given away. I will start out new in PI. I have no desire to ship my truck to PI as I am not willing to deal with the broken unfair system they have with importing cars in PI.

The concerns or little details as you mentioned that I have are real. For anyone to get on a plane and move to PI with out having all his ducks in a row creates problems. I am a very detailed person and will do my homework before I step out into anything that might create stress. A person must know how to ensure that they have their ducks in a row with regards to access to their money, health insurance they may have if it will work in their new location. Importing household goods or even a vehicle. The lists is long and I would think that when you made the move over 20 years ago, you had questions and I am willing to bet that you did not have a site like this.

I suspect Sid to be the same way with his thinking and asking for information. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think any board that is on the net today like this one is there to help people and provide information from old timers like yourself.

There is no axe to grain here. It is a board to listen and share information. Why we still ask or try to compare different countries, cities, etc is beyond me. If I had to compare where I am living now with "any' major city in the world, "I" would not leave. Why? It's becasue I am comfortable and feel safe. I know where to go for anything that might pop up and have great medical close by. Before you ask. Why then would I want to retire in the Philippines? As I stated, Get away from the cold winters here and be in a place that is warm and relaxing.

For me, I would select PI to retire in. Not because of family being there, but I enjoy the culture and the people. I have never been to Dumaguete, so I can not say which location in the PI is better.

Just as a few have said, it all depends on what you are looking for and what your needs are in PI. I know that where ever I hang my hat, I will be traveling around the PI during my retirement and visiting as much of it as I can. The list is long and since a few members on here are new and have relocated to Dumaguete, I would like to visit them in the future.
