I searched for a thread regarding the frequent black out but sorry, as a new member, didn't find any.

Question : Due to frequent power failures, I should connect a portable power generator to cover some lamps and the PC group on !

    Any ideas, suggestions ?

By the way, I cannot understand how and why Filipinos use the term "brown out"..! When I told them, power has not any color other than black/white, meaning OFF/ON, the reply was "when it's for a short time..." I argued that either 5 seconds or 5 hours, it's a black out, no power, end of the story.
(Maybe it was a ..marketing idea  of Meralco...)

A generator may not be a bad idea depending on what you want to run. There are less expensive alternatives to the initial purchase price, upkeep and fuel requirements of a generator if the load is small though. An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) of sufficient load carrying capacity will run a computer for hours during a "brown out". I use a 750 watt one to keep my laptop running along with a fan during brownouts.

 WHO? decided what to call a power Cut/Interruption. Like most things they are called different things in Different Countries, Here in Spain apparently it is just called Nada Luz! ( No Light ) If you are in the PI! go with the Flow "It's a Brown Out" You can purchase back up battery units for the PC, Candles are simple and very inexpensive. Have a Good day now.

blackout is the total loss of power while brownout is a drop in voltage in electrical power supply.
i remember when i was a kid everybody always called it blackout.

Ha, I had an extra honda generator at home in USA so i shipped balikbayan to dumaguete. Not only is it 1000 watt with eco throttle to burn .6 gallon gas in 8 hour on low power load,It is 120 volt for my 120 volt appliances/etc i shipped over..I hope my balikbayan box arrives,it smelled of gasoline when shipped, residual gas not full tank...$400 dollars rebuilt here versus $850(US Dollar)in pilippines or USA..$80 to ship it with abunch of other stuff..very light ,portable like a suitcase and very quiet...I hope my balikbayan makes it I love my generator...

    Akis,

I use Uninterpretable Power Supplies on my computer equipment and that gives me enough time to get the generator started. I bought a 3,000 watt generator...it's big enough to power everything except aircons (however, the hot water heater and espresso maker really tax the generator although it has never kicked off due to an overload.)

I recommend spending a little bit and having both...it makes the frequent power outages much more tolerable. In fact, I wish I would have bought a 5,000 watt unit so I could run the aircon also!

I have never heard of a UPS that would run a computer and fan for hours...that must be one big unit! The graph on mine suggests it will operate a CPU and 21" LCD monitor for 5 to 7 minutes. APC is the brand when it comes to UPS's, but they are very expensive here...I decided to give the Philippine-made Mitsui a try...I think they are around P3,500 each...so far so good!

:smile:We are quite happy with our Mitsui, As long as we don't do too much work after Lights Out, we get about 20 mins so enough time to save and close, My McAfee AV has a built in File save but it only works in 1 min cycles so we do loose work if the cycle is new.

Just my 5c worth. Hello all out there, Hope all is well with all reading this.
