Maybe it should be regarded the other way around. What are the risks to a Filipino visiting Hong Kong?

My wife and I are scheduled to visit Hong Kong towards the end of September. Her sense of shame makes her quite apprehensive about how the locals there will regard her. My re-assurance is not helping her much.

The good news? All of the cancellations should make for plenty of empty seats on the plane!

Don't compare Dumaguete with Manila. It's safer in Dumaguete than in Manila. Besides, the city has one of lowest crime rates in the country. Please do proceed with your trip. :D

    Ben,
I am a member of this forum but at the moment living in Luzon, Baguio. The incident in Manila was a isolated, mishandled and unfortunate incident. This is a wounderful country to visit and with a sensible head you can safely see all parts of the philippines my only advice is be careful of the older means of tranportation giving our incident in Baguio a few weeks ago.
So go to Dumaguete and have a few beers along the boulevard, if you drink.

True, your chances of having a great vacation in the Philippines are excellent. Even in Manila you'll likely have a good time without dramas. But that hostage fiasco, and the aftermath, was a terrible indictment on the total incompetence of 'modern' Philippine governance. It was far beyond stupid. Filipinos everywhere were embarrassed. Need to hire a couple Israelis....

    Ben

I have been going to the Philippines since 1976. I have lived in the PI on two tours with the Navy. I have traveled to Samar since 1981. I have even taken a bus from Western Samar all the way to Manila over night with no problems. At no time did I ever feel scared or worried about traveling in the Philippines. Some will say that is becasue I was with family. The bottom line is that was a situation where many drop the ball. It was sad how it ended. I agree that maybe HK could be a place where Filipinos may have problems. Come and enjoy a beautiful country and friendly people.

    No Threat!

 I am in Brunei at the Moment, I went via HK and as far as I could see or tell , there was nothing out of the ordinary at HK Airport. I feel as posted already, it was a ONE off ,that actually has been somewhat forgotten. Bad lables apart. :(

It is no dangerous than it was before, during and after that isolated incident.

Such violence occur, however, if it occurred outside the PI, people have no qualms about safety in those regions. VA shooting, Columbine shooting, UT shooting, Mall Shootings - did anybody stop going to school or the mall ?

Dont give in to the fear sowed by the media - else one may not leave the confines and safety of their homes - barring armed break ins :p

However, I wont advise you to go visit certain places in Mindanao (esp if you're a caucasian) - it's never been safe in a number of places there.

I agree 100%!! I said the same thing in an earlier post. I was saddened to hear of several filipino house-helpers being fired from their jobs in HK because of the incident.....like they had something to do with it!! I am sure they were as mortified as their employers were at what happened. I hope they find new jobs soon, as I am sure they have family here depending on their incomes.
