Every time I visit the PH, I need to get online with my computer. This can prove to be a royal pain in the you know where.

So I was considering taking my own UMTS Surf Stick (yes it is unlocked) with me the next time and getting a local prepaid SIM. I do the same for my phone and it works a dream.

Now my question is what kind of a SIM would I need to get in order to be able to surf? And with which provider? (I was on the Globe site but could not find anything.) In order to surf, would it come with a daily prepaid or hourly rate? And lastly could I use it for my phone too (the old fashioned type that can phone and SMS only, so I need to only get one SIM)?

Lots of questions, I hope any of you out there knows the solution.

    Thanks.

Globe and Smart are the only two providing this service that I know of. I use the Smart version when I travel and quality is spotty. Excellent in a Makati high-rise, virtually non-existent a few days earlier in downtown Davao. Smart's is P20 load per half hour.

I got mine directly from Smart...not sure if you can use a regular SIM card in it or not...guess I could try if no one else knows the answer. Their is a monthly unlimited option, but I am not aware of any daily options.

    Thanks derivative_guru

Brilliant. Could you tell me what kind of SIM you got? Not all SIM's are fit to surf.

Any special software needed? Or just create a profile and of you go.

I understand, I think Globe has better coverage, or?

    thanks.

The SIM I got came from Smart with the SmartBro dopple. The software automatically loads when plugged in to the USB.

Some areas Globe's coverage is better, some areas, Smart's coverage is better. It varies. I have seen people advertising "Unlocked" dopples. I suppose you could get a SIM from each if that were the case and use whichever one had the better service at each location.

    Home - Smart Bro

For Smart you need the SmartBro sim. You can't purchase this separately from the SmartBro USB modem kit which costs Php1495 right now ( previously Php995). You can get a replacement SmartBro sim though for Php40.

You can however purchase a Smart Buddy prepaid sim (Php 35 - 40)and use it in your UMTS surf stick. You would have to make the necessary settings manually though. ( you can search symbianize.com for the correct settings).
