    Hi all, great site!
im jay, originally from the boston, massachusetts area, now living on maui, hawaii. Im 50, and just a regular kind of guy looking at new places to visit, and possibly move to.
I had my 1st visit to the philippines last month to meet a friends sister, now my girlfriend, we met in butuan city and had a great time there. I would like to move somewhere near domaguete to learn more about her and the culture.
she has some family around there, and as butuan wasnt my favorite place, im open to dumaguete.
I will be there for a visit in the next few weeks to have a look around and was hoping to get a little advance info... im only able to stay for a week or so this visit and while im there will be looking for a place to rent on a long term basis, as well as cost of living info, and obtaining a long term visa.
any help anyone can offer will be greatly apreciated! also, are there many expats there, id really like to hear from you as well thanks for your help, and for having this great forum jay

    Hawaii to philippines

Hi Jay Fanklin I live on hawaii Island/Big Island near you and will be in dumaguete leaving hawaii November 3rd as in 4 weeks form today,I was there in feb- june this year and will be there 8 months this time and will do the whole year august 2011-2012. Cost of living comes first, there was a consensus for single man{ not into [tourist attractions, traveling and party spender who likes to blow it all for boredom]$700 US dollars a month as very decent living cost and $1400 as the higher end with expensive girlfriend eating out always/travel...People do live off of $300 a month it depends on how local filipina style you can compromise to..$200 is considered a good monthly income in dumaguete and $60 is considered a minimum monthly income there though some live with even less than that....$700 is not including the initial price of long term visa requirements.visa prices vary on what kind and how long,,$700 a month living expense does include the 59 day visa extension=less than $100. More guys here will chime in with their info..

Welcome aboard! There is a lot of great info here. To get an idea of how much apartments go for use the search function or check out the classifieds.

    Hi all,
thanks very much for the info! it is very helpful, Ill be there to have a look around, before coming in january with alma. In a perfect world Ill be looking to rent a house not too far from dumaguete, close to tranportation, 1 or 2 bedroooms, cable tv, or satalite access, internet and A/C,hopefully near other expats, in a safe area. i understand nothing is 100% safe but hopefully you get the idea.. so if any one has a lead please let me know! I look forward to meeting some of you on my visit coming up, and maybe even have time for some diving.
Rhoody, im not sure why you deleted the posters number, so Ill just say thanks and assume you you looking out for me being the new guy, i owe you a beer! jay

Jay, it is probably the best to come here, stay first in a hotel, rent a scooter and drive around looking for your place.
If you find one you like, go there at daytime, evening, night and early morning to check the neighborhood. You don't wanna rent a place where from 9pm on the karaoke of the neighbor runs on 11 and at 5 am 100 chicken welcome the new day.

    cheers

    Rhoody
