Well my last day at work here in the US is tomorrow. I got an email from the President of the company thanking me for my service etc. I replied with a reminder that I could work remotely from the PH if they wished.

Her reply was that they had heard that there are security issues with data in the PH. Bwahahahaha! That is no surprise really since many computers in the PH and all over Asia are not properly protected and probably pirated.

Anyway I suggested that we could use a vpn to connect me to thier office and funnel any traffic through the vpn but got no reply.

Have any of you other IT/internet workers had data security issues/ I'm just wondering if there was some specific threat.

    Thanks

    IT Security!

Hi Tom Jack P. here, For me, I have not come across and security problems,
Having a good AV programme well Updated is The Tops for me. I use McAfee but Azon has AVG, both I feel do the job asked. I always try and use secure pages when available and as I use On-line banking, I have a 24 day password change on Auto prompt. I am by no means an IT wizard or any way near it but if you do all you can to protect, then, I feel you will be as secure as if you are still in the US. Rhoody or The Dane maybe, will offer a lot more information than I ever could. The one thing I do however, is keep sensitive data in an online vault at McAfee and External HD. I am not sure how secure this is but again I do as much as I can to keep the hackers away.
As they say, " Were there is a Will There is a Way" but I feel confident I have done all I can.

    Just my 5c.

At the end of the day you send 0 and 1 through a wire. what you make out of it is up to you.
The only security problem which I ever experienced was letting anybody touch my workstation...

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what they were referring to except "security Issues" The same company has outsourced lots of tech support to a company that is based in Mumbay. I think it was just an excuse myself but thought I would ask if there were any Particular threats.

Good AV is a good start but also a bit of common sense about where you go on the internet and what bogus AV popups look like etc. I would not want to type anything secure on the computers at the cyber cafe cause you never know if they have a key-logger or other spyware/malware.

Do the cyber cafe's allow you to bring your own laptop in and use it?

Why go to an internet cafe when you can get free WiFi in Robinson's Mall or the local McDonalds?

He he I don't usually do normal coffee, just espresso preferably with beans I grind myself but the coffee shop that was under Lee Plaza was pretty good when I was last there.

I have been thinking about a globe or smart bro usb thing but not sure that there is signal where the house is. About 2-3 KM directly west of the center of Sibulan. Not far from Forrest Camp. I know there are other options as well so I will just have to keep trying till I find something that works. .... Or I will spen a lot of time at the Mall

    COFFEE!!!! mmmmmmmmmm

 Have to agree tom, the coffee in Lee P is good, I often stay there and read the paper while my ladies food shop. I can't offer any information on reception in that Area but I guess there will be a few replies. Where we are in Valencia I can only get a worthwhile Signal at the Back of the house which strangely enough faces the mountain, I would have thought better at the front but then that's air waves for you.
So my friend, I hope as is going well for you, I guess the excitement is building up now?
