I have been out walking in Zamboanga City about 18 hours of the day. Sometimes I was concerned. But I never had any trouble.

I have been out walking in Davao City about 20 hours of the day. I was never either concerned or attacked.

I have been out walking in Cebu City all 24 hours of the day. I was never either concerned or attacked.

I have been out walking in Metro Manila all 24 hours of the day. I was never either concerned or attacked.

I have been out walking in Dumaguete City all 24 hours of the day. I was attacked some five times. Three of those times were one night while I was riding a motorcycle. Another one was in midday; only after I demanded pursuit did a police officer walk in the direction my assailant had run. When I later looked around the corner they had turned, I saw no sign of help. I think that the officer may have seen the assault. (Some people tell me police here will not help foreigners.) Two other times I talked my way out of being attacked by "foreigner"-hating brown-skinned men.

There is much to come to Dumaguete City for. But other places might be safer. If I had known of the hatred here I would not have moved. I am only considering going on, not already left because another place might also be unsafe.

What about different parts of Ireland?

 

Dumaguete SEEMS like a safe place. It's relatively quiet at night, etc. But, I have lived in Makati, Cebu City and now Dumaguete and I have had MANY more issues in Dumaguete than in Makati or Cebu City, yet Makati and Cebu SEEM less safe...Maybe the appearance of quiet and calm is only that...an appearance...

 

well, I guess I do something wrong. I walk around since 5 years.

I got attacked 3 times. 2 times by the same guy, once by his friend.

the 2 were drunk expats. That might be the dangerous part in Dumaguete. Of course i have issues here, but none of them is safety related. (excluding crossing a street in dumaguete traffic)

sorry, but this I heard about "something from somebody stories" or "5 times attacked in 24 hours" have the value of a burst sack of rice in china.

Thinking twice, I guess I am just blending in perfectly with my small body, brown skin and invisible appearance that all the bad locals here just don't recognize me five times a day...

 

Safe

Of course it is safe here, alot safer than Britain. Just stick to the golden rules of common sense. Dont be wandering around down dark streets alone at 3 in the morning. Be polite to people and keep out of other peoples business. Come here and enjoy the great things the country has to offer

While in my house, I feel as safe as I did in California or Makati, but like those places I lock all doors with a double lock and make sure the windows are secured. Safety issues are more on the street, driving and avoiding crazy bikers, pedicabs, trucks, buses, vans, pedestrians, dogs and chickens. Like the other places I lived, I would not walk down my road or any road at 0300 without an M16 so I don't. (foreigners cannot own a weapon in PI). A lot of folks have dogs, my neighbors all have them so no need. When I move I will have a dog and motion detector lights.

Ruanard, I don't believe it is necessary to explain what terrorism is like on this forum, particularly the No. Ireland situation, nothing positive to be gained by that. Rest assured that our City of Gentle People is safer than most if you don't do stupid things or as others have said walk the streets at O dark thirty. Here, you have to deal with vehicle safety which is managed by focus and using your horn. You will keep your doors locked as you would most anywhere in the world. Local guys will give your female partner long looks but normally will not comment. The rebels here don't bother the foreigners and don't blow up places. This may be your paradise compared to Belfast. And finally, yes, there are fellow Irishmen here.
