So...I've been out of the diving game for over a year now and would definitely need a refresher course. Does Silliman University offer anything for students? Plus I need to purchase and rent equipment =/

What part did you forget ??

Rentals are available though you might have trouble with most resorts wanting you to only dive in front of their location rather than letting you just go off on your own like we do in the US.

I met a Filipino named Jeffrey who rented stuff cheap enough. He was even going to let me use his ToyTruck..

    Hi Tina

I don't know if SU offer scuba refresher courses, but there are quite a few dive shops in town that should be able to sort you out. PADI offers a program called Scuba Review, it's basically redoing all the skills from your open water course (clearing mask, recovering regulator and so on) a knowledge review and a normal guided dive.

This may or may not be what you're looking for - perhaps you just want someone to keep a close eye on you and give you a hand as as you go for a dive?

Anyway, if you want to go for the PADI program, I think your cheapest option would be going with either Scuba Ventures or Harold's Mansion (situated right next to each other) - they both offer cheap rental equipment. My guess is it'd cost you somewhere between 2000-4000 php.

    Good luck,

Thanks DivingDane! I'll check out both of your suggested places. I've seen the diving shop on the blvd near Why Not?. Is that the hangout for all you divers? haha.

That would be Mikes Adventure Diveshop at the Boulevard.I freelance for him quite a bit.
We charge 2,500. what we do i a refresher is basically a review of some basic rules of diving while finding and setting up the equipment.

If the ocean is fine we go to the Dauin Sanctuary, there is a nice shallow trainings-area next to the coral gardens. here we run through the basic skills and emergency procedures, if all that is fine and you are comfortable, the rest of the time is a normal guided dive through the Dauin Sanctuary.

    cheers

    Rhoody

If you decide to go with Mike's Diveshop, I can vouch for Rhoody. He may look like an ogre, but he swims like a dolphin.

Tina, you are VERY wise to take a refresher course. Not being a frequent diver, I went only 7 months between my last dive vacation and the refresher course I took and trust me it was well worth it and my confidence and comfort returned. You don't realize how much you forgot and the things that should be automatic until you suit up and get in the water. I have also heard that Rhoody is a great dive instructor and makes it fun while refreshing your skills. I will use Rhoody to certify my new bride soon. Good diving.
