    Mabuhay All,

I just joined the Dumaguete Forum and want to say hello. My username is DocDavis for a couple of reasons. I used to be a US Navy Hospital Corpsman and served with the Marines in the 1970s. The Marines always called me Doc. I later served in an Air Force medical evacuation squadron out of McChord Air Base in Washington.

Another reason for the Doc tag is that I earned a doctoral (PhD) degree from the University of Georgia (1985) and my university students today call me Doc for short.

I have been to the Philippines numerous times, but always in Luzon: Subic Bay, Clark Air Base, Baguio, and Manila. I have heard so many great things about Dumaguete and hope to visit for a few weeks during my upcoming sabbatical. I live in Northern Utah, so I can always use a break from the freezing temperatures in December, January and February.

I am looking forward to visiting Silliman University when I get there. I've gotten some useful info from the forum already and hope to make a contribution later as I am able. Best regards to all!

Hi Doc, and a welcome from me also. Medics are frequently nicknamed Doc in the British Forces too. You'll find that there are quite a few veterans from all of the Services in and around Dumaguete, with a fair sprinkling of retired marines in their numbers, both U.S. and Brit. After a certain age however, we tend to try and keep mobile, if only to prevent barnacles forming on our lower extremities :D

Look on your visit to Dumaguete as just reward for the time you spent enduring the freezing winter hell of northern Utah. Enjoy, and if our paths cross in the city then I'll be happy to share a bucket or two of liquid reviver.

    Roger

There are no "ex-Marines" only "former Marines" as we say.
Welcome and Semper Fi to you.
    Enjoy your stay Doc.

And for those that don't know, the field medic was the MOST important man in the unit. Everybody protected him.
    Thanks for your work.

Agree with you there Ron. That's probably why there was no mention of "ex-marines" in this thread, and I chose my words carefully and referred to "retired marines".
