I am planning a new guest house and koi pond in my yard. Does anybody know about koi ponds or know someone who can help be with the finer details.
First of all, what is the best way to build it here? Cement, fiberglass, or liner. Where can I find all the materials I am going to need? What kind of filtration system is best for here? I need to know pretty much everything from start to finish, I am a greenhorn when comes to fish and especially ponds. For starters more or less I need help in the construction end of things. I want to make sure it is done right the first time.
Reinforced concrete at least 3' deep, but deeper is better. Coat the cured and primered concrete with an epoxy type pool paint to keep it from leaking. A step down of 1-2' (ledge) around the perimeter is good if you want potted water plants. A ledge is also great if someone (kids) falls in as it is much easier to get out. Slope the bottom towards a central drain and use it for the filter pick up point. A large grate with 1/2" or so mesh over it will keep fish from getting sucked to the drain opening. A simple gravel/sand filter will work well for removing solids. Plants will remove nitrates. 20% water change a week will keep it looking clear if it is not over stocked. Filter and pump size depends on how large of a pond. Do you want a waterfall? I wish I was still there as I could over see it for you and give you more help. PM me if you have specific questions or want to know more. Concrete, rebar, and pumps can all be found locally, as can eopoxy sealing paint.
One of our DI members has a shop in Dumaguete in the Locsin street somewhat further the road than the police station (going direction Valencia at the left side). Try to go there or contact him via a PM. His name on this forum is Dirky00018. He knows a lot of water filtring and sells a.o. Koi fishes.
Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate it. If I have any more questions I will surely ask. Next question does anyone know who I could bring in to dig and build the pone. Someone reliable and with good workmanship in this area.
You can call and ask Gerry on 09212201587. He made together with his companion Lorenzo my swimming pool a year ago and I'm not dissatisfied with them. They worked good and fast with their crew, although the budget they made for the required materials was about 20% underestimated If your pond is small there will be many who can do that. We made ours ourself. Meaning: I tell what and how my workers (fixed workers at our place) had to do it and I kept watching :D
