Wow, scary stuff. Is this sort of extortion limited to Manila and Cebu or does it happen in places like Dumaguete too?
It took me some hours to download the 3 parts of Alfred Lehnarts work (very slow internet connection !) but it is more than worth to take that time. I knew about him but never saw the whole story. There are books written about how foreigners have been deported, prisonned, falsly accused etc..etc... It makes me always angry to read or see this. I admire a guy like Alfred Lehnarts so much for doing the things he does after having been treated himself so badly here in the Philippines. At least some politicians/lawyers are standing up now to do something. I know personally ONE of them. Hope they don't do it for selfish reasons and get the progress in bringing down corruption and greedyness . Lehnarts could help already a lot of others out of prison where there were in for NO reason (or can you call here a jaleous neighbour a legal reason ?). Thanks Firefly for sharing these links. It does also take place HERE JJ83 ! A friend of mine had to be deported. Finally he was allowed to stay......but he quited this country after 19 years living here. He had enough.
Good stuff to know, but as long as we are on the subject, a word to the wise. keep your passport extensions legal and don't go for any shady stamps. People have crashed and burned trying to take cheap short cuts.
As if it was not enough already dealing with your wife's relatives, wife, neighbours, corrupt government officials, police officers, businness associates.... Mafia is the word that comes to mind, although in the Phils it is a nationalized institution....
I didn't know that things like this are happening here, like putting innocent tourists in jail. My brother-in-law who worked in another Asian country also experienced the same thing. He was, for no reason, thrown to jail among others who were there to work.
