And, as only my own opinion, I moved here to live to get AWAY from the "normal" Texas routine (if that is normal).
I have two riddles for everyone.....
    1. What is the difference between two solid yellow lines and a dotted white line in the center of the road. Answer - nothing
    2. What is the meaning of a chair, potted plant, bags of trash or lumber in the road? Answer - a broken down vehicle ahead
    God I love the Philippines.........

And, I didn't move here to change the Philippines, I moved here for the Philippines to change me - and it's doing a wonderful job so far.

All well and good for those who like it how it is now. I first saw Dumaguete about 12 years ago, it was very pleasant, you could park anywhere and at any time you liked. No hassles and virtually no polution.

Not so nowadays. An ever increasing population level and access to easy financing for 2 stroke motorbikes has led to the behavior of less than gentle people. Not likely to get better, only for more aggression before road rage takes over; unless of course people like the op wish to be pro-active and start a debate about the subject.

Just a few ideas: set a time frame for all 2 stroke engines to be banned from the city. Say about 3 years from now.

Local and National government to have the balls and resources to build the by-pass from North to South to eliminate container truck traffic.

Build the sea port outside of the city, connecting to the by-pass.

Paint lines on the road and teach people they are not decorations.

Serious full time traffic cops (yeah, I know...)

Long term solutions required, Dumaguete is not going to get smaller....take it or leave it.

Dumaguete traffic suits me. The downsides are motorcyclists who drive without headlights at night; pedicabs that block traffic for minutes while negotiating rides or making change; and the fact that most drivers of private cars are utterly inept. Those imperfections are minor compared to the annoyance of traffic lights, stop signs, and all the other hassles that come with driving in the states.

I've driven a 4-wheeler here before, so I can see how anyone would be frustrated by that. But on 2 wheels, Dumaguete is remarkably driver-friendly. It's fine on foot too. If you hesitate, drivers won't yield for you. If you don't hesitate, they will yield for you.

This could be the single biggest improvement in the city, a little drivers education, and a lot of light bulbs.. hahaha

Zak, you're not that foreigner who used stand by Cebu Midtown Hotel ten years ago directing traffic and blowing his whistle at jaywalkers are you?

A Filipino motorcycle club from Bacolod was in Dgte about five years ago. I was talking to them on the blvd, and they were commenting on drivers in Dgte saying something like, "drivers are not polite in Dgte"...

A few days later I mentioned the bad traffic to some Dgte Filipinos on the blvd, and their response was something about how the foreigners way always has to be better?

    - Maybe they hadn't actually done any driving, or at least not in a city with better managed traffic.

The traffic system (?) in Dgte seems to work though. I've driven both a pickup and a motorcycle and it's ok. It looks worse than it actually is most of the time.

I am (almost) embarrassed to say that I'm starting to drive like them, both car and bike.
    When in Rome.....
