What is it with the new fuel stations/gimmiks opening in the city. One just opened after the old banica and another is set to open near Silliman . Am I the only person who doesnt think that mixing drunken revellers , smoking and high octane fuel is a good idea?

What does one have to do with the other? It's up to the fuel station to enforce the safety rules. One good thing is, because of the humidity here, there doesn't seem to be a static electricity problem like other countries that commonly start fires at the pump.

you are correct they are springing up everywhere, I met a guy here setting up 3 new stations starting at Dauin and going South. There must be money to be made.

Gas stations is very good business indeed.
If you have the right location the gascompany (Petron,Shell etc ) will shoulder all expences to put up a station (at least in Cebu they do)
After that you find some highly educated people to fill the gastanks of your clients and collect the money.

"Shoulder all expenses" as in free and clear, or as in they lease it back to you like they do in the U.S. ?

Ron, I am not sure about that, the one at the old Banica ha a Restobar with outside sitting area about 5 meters away from the actual filling process. I saw at the opening people smoking around the cars and had actually the same thoughts as the OP as I don't think the cigarettes end up in an ashtray but simply get thrown away. A few drops on the ground and a cigarette might be enough.

I am sure with your "enforcing safety rules"-statement you were simply sarcastic, we are talking about the Philippines and you are long enough here, diba

The one at the old Banica is enforcing the rush-hour chaos immensely. each car coming down from Valencia need to cross both lanes of that main-road. I was waiting yesterday 10 minutes while 2 trucks squeezed through the traffic blocking it in both direction and "felt in line" in perpendicular on the mainstreet.

    HI Rhoody,

Not sarcastic but thought that one would bring a good safety debate.
I haven't been to that station yet but agree 5 mtrs away from a ktv sounds scary.
Thinking back, I have seen a lot of tragic fires, but not a gas station fire. just lucky or to common to make the news?

Shoulder all expenses means starting from a ready to use lot (no building on it) built ready to start business.
In Belgium we call this "key on the door" so ready to start.

it is a Restobar directly located on the stations property, which is not that big.

Funny side-note about "enforcement" while waiting 10 minutes staring on a big truck-tire from the blocking truck mentioned above, I tried to squeeze through a small path at the station but was not allowed by one traffic enforcer and 2 policeman who enjoyed the opening event ...

Since we are on this safety issue. 1 time I was at the Petron in Sibulan and next to me was a foreigner sitting in his car with a cigarette hanging out the window while the attendant pumped his fuel. I mention this not because it was a foreigner but safety and responsibility. I had to say something to him. Just curious what other people would have done

I'm under the understanding that gasoline (petrol) doesn't require any heat to ignite just the smallest ignition spark. So I just did my own little test. I just poured a small amount on my concrete sidewalk, Lit a cigarette and threw it in. The cigarette went shhhhh, soaked up the gas and went out. That was what I expected, but still think it takes a fool to smoke at a gas station because the strong fumes could be a different story.
