Thats not strange Ron, its what public caneing and $1,000 dollar fines will do. Also that is a city state. There are cameras everywhere, talk about big brother, just visit Singapore.

 

And Pedro, after I ate dinner, I stood outside and smoked a cigarette, and a shop keeper walked over and mention that I needed to put the cigarette butt in the recepticle or that was a $500 fine.

 

I really don't want to know what he teaches!

And as an ongoing sage of traffic here, my wife's uncle, who is in his late 40's, who has never had a drivers license, has no registration for his motor, has no number plate on it, but was wearing long pants and a helmet, got stopped by the LTO in Puerto this morning. They asked for 1000 pesos, but he only had 500 pesos on him, so they took that and let him go.
I asked him if he was going to get his drivers license now and he replied "why should I?"
hummmm......phils logic I guess.

I have been up here in Makati tooling around for a couple of months on my little moto and have logged about 600 km in the last 6 weeks from Alabang to Quezon city and everywhere in between. Saturday I braved the streets of Binondo. At first EDSA and C-5 seem intimidating, but I have found it is less chaotic than driving in Dumaguete.

What other members have commented regarding the indigenous populace that have "more pesos than sense" and have purchased 4 wheels to become a menace in Dumaguete seem to be the real problem to me. I would rather share the road with the buses on EDSA than face these people.

Dumaguete is unique in the act that it has more motorcycles per capita than any other place in the Philippines. I find it simply amazing that a city of it's size manages to have no stop signs and traffic flows reasonably well. The nouveau riche are degrading that quality and disrupting the flow.

There is a mindset here though that prevails among some the "gentle people" is rudeness whether it is on the road or in the line at the grocery store. There are too many VIPs (Very impatient Pilipinos) around who perceive themselves as true VIPs (Very Important Pilipinos) and have no regard for others.

I am getting ready to put my little moto on the ferry for it's trip to it's new home in Dumaguete. I am afraid it will not see too much action other than the occasional trip to the grocery for something we need. We will continue to use our suki trike driver for most of our transportation needs.
